Robert Downey Jr. Delivers A Very Emotional Speech At The Avengers Premier

Robert Downey Jr. is the one who started it all with Iron Man 10 years ago. He is the big daddy, he is the Godfather is the center of the magical MCU that we all love today. Sadly, we are left with just 2 movies that will portray RDJ’s Tony Stark. One is going to come out just tomorrow, while the other one is going to be out next year in May. After that, Downey will be done with Marvel and the MCU, and we may never see him return again.

The world premiere of Avengers: Infinity War took place day before yesterday, and we got to see almost all the big actors who are a part of this mega event appear on the red carpet and reveal some interesting things about the movie. Robert Downey Jr. the biggest entity in the MCU gave us a heartfelt and emotional speech that all of us fans surely wanted to hear from him. Here’s what he said:

“This is a miracle. And if any one of us took credit it would be heresy. It would be blasphemy. Screw it … you’re welcome! I want to talk about the past, present, and future. The past for me was 30 years of dependency, depravity, and despair …. otherwise known as ‘An Actor Prepares!’

The present is this moment of glory for all of us. And the future…? That is always uncertain. But looking at these friends behind me,” Downey said with a look back, “it seems like things might brighten up after all. None of us are in competition with each other. We are all competing for each other — and for you.”

“If you play a superhero in one of these movies, and it works, you become a big star! And it … is … meaningless. Unless you use that to achieve something higher. You have to take direction from peers, and your family, and occasionally even an actual director.”

He said the directing a Marvel movie in particular is –

“extremely dangerous! It’s like a crucible. You either come out steel or dust.”

He then took a moment to appreciate the amazing duo of Anna Bowden and Ryan Fleck hard at work with the upcoming solo female led movie captain Marvel. Here’s what he said:

“Now at least half a directing team is female. Making these movies is so taxing that it is clearly a woman’s job. It’s essentially gestation. But we don’t know how to do that.”.

He praised how immensely successful Black Panther was by saying:

“Wakanda rules the day and rightfully so. By the way, Wakanda forever!” (Throwing a salute at Chadwick Boseman) I can do that as an honorary black man: Tropic Thunder, 2008!”

He stopped for a minute or so and let the crowd burst into laughter. The he continued:

“This is the MCU, right in front of you. It’s all about fighting for equality. The whole idea is to make space for others to succeed, and exceed our expectations. [The movies] are inviting us to surrender and love and be of service. They are metaphors for how our world should be — or could be one day, if we fight for it.”

“My writing is getting more sketchy.” Then, looking at Gwyneth Paltrow, Downey called her “the very first First Lady of Marvel, and now there are many.”

Then he praised Jon Favreau, the man who was responsible for bringing Iron Man to life on the screen.

“When they say the man who started it all, that is you, Jon. You brought it to life,”

He mentioned that the directors of Infinity War, Joe, and Anthony Russo have been on an “ICU Drip” as the job of making these two movies has been so hard and tiring. He said:

“They have not turned to dust yet.”

He continued by saying that he took a lot of time for preparing this speech.

“I was up late. I got a tattoo — I don’t want to talk about it! It’s none of your business!” he said to a laugh. “I was up late and wrote this, and …I think this might be the greatest speech ever written! Or maybe I’m just emo and exhausted.”

And this concluded the speech which was funny and emotional for all the fans. Downey is going to be done with Marvel as he is looking to move forward with his career in other genres. He already has 4-5 projects lined up for the next 3 years. We will surely miss him.

He literally is “Iron Man.”
