It came. It saw. It conquered. The movie which was a decade in the making and is the lovechild of 18 movies before it is the grand culmination of everything Marvel has ever worked for ever since Iron Man in 2008. Infinity War is here. It is not what you would imagine to be a typical Marvel movie. For the first time, Marvel tried a darker tone and it silenced all those who made fun of MCU for weak villains and comic book events taking place without lasting consequences. Well, not this time.
The stakes are high and the ending is heart-wrenching. It affects everyone. The Avengers and the rest of the heroes will still be reeling from its aftermath. But the most affected by the ending from Infinity War is none other than our very own band of misfit, space-faring, outlaws. Here’s how Infinity War’s ending affects the Guardians of the Galaxy!!
Spoiler Alert: MASSIVE Spoilers for Infinity War. We suggest you watch the movie first before reading this or end up spoiling ten years of patient waiting….
The Guardians of the Galaxy will be the first Marvel movie that even Marvel Studios wasn’t sure would succeed. Yet it proved everybody wrong. It became one of Marvel’s greatest ever hits by a large margin and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 is still counted as one of the greatest superhero comedies till date. A team of outlaws that works for money and occasionally do the right thing have been a fan favorite and a profitable franchise within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And after Infinity War, the consequences for the Guardians are one too many.
Well, we know, Russo brothers warned us about the heartbreak and nobody felt it more than GOTG fans.
Here’s what Russos said (in case you don’t remember):
“For us, it’s very important that the heroes feel pain and that they make sacrifices because I think that, not only is a great storytelling, but it also is inspiring and I think we need a lot of inspiration in this world right now. So, for us, I don’t know if we can ever get you to accept it, but we promise you this: we’ll do our best to tell you the best story possible, and what you do with it from there is up to you.”
“And for us, the best stories have stakes. Characters have to make sacrifices. To really, really feel the true emotion and the hero’s journey they have to go through trials and those trials could cost them something.”
Brace yourselves. This will be hard.
Almost the entire team of the Guardians is dead. Only Rocket survives the ordeal. Thanos manages to get hold of all the six Infinity Stones and before the heroes could take the Gauntlet off of him and kill him (believe me, they tried many times and gave it their best).
Thanos managed to snap his fingers and do what he originally wanted to do. Before the Avengers could win the fight, Thanos succeeded in wiping out half of all life in the universe. Starlord, Gamora, Groot, Drax, and Mantis are now dead. Thanos managed to kill them off.
While most of the Guardians’ casualties for Infinity War died via the Gauntlet, Gamora died after Thanos personally pushed her off to the side of a cliff.
Gamora was confident that Thanos can never get hold of all six Infinity stones as only she is aware of the location of Soul stone. She was sent by Thanos to identify the whereabouts of the stone but he never shared that piece of information with him. Eventually, Thanos came to know that Gamora is hiding the map, so he captured her sister Nebula and tortured her until she gives up the location of Soul stone.
But there Thanos meets Captain America’s villain ‘Red Skull’ at the gates of Vormir who once tried to wield Cosmic Cube and got banished instead. He told Thanos that he can never get Soul stone without sacrifice of a soul he loves and he did’nt even think twice before he sacrificed his own favorite daughter.
Regardless of their deaths, the Guardians of the Galaxy are now officially defunct. In an interview, James Gunn admitted that Rocket Raccoon will be a huge part of GOTG Vol. 3 and that Star Lord will not be the central character. Well, he is also the only surviving member of Infinity War. But you cannot start a team with just one. Relax…all hope is not lost. There may still be hope for the Guardians to reset and restart. New members could start rolling in.
We have some theories as to how Guardians could grow back if the Infinity War deaths stay permanent.
Gamora may be dead but her sister isn’t. Nebula has become one of the good guys after GOTG Vol. 2 and has actively tried to kill Thanos ever since. She was the reason Gamora died in the first place when Thanos tortured her into making Gamora give out the location of the Soul Stone.
Gamora and Nebula are now close as they could ever be. The former was the moral compass of the Guardians and she gave up her life to protect the latter. If Nebula joins the Guardians, it will be out of respect for her now dead sister. She at least owes her that much.
Our second slate of candidates is a bit of an oddball for some. But MCU likes to play it weird and bizarre sometimes like they did with infinity War so we can’t complain. At the end of GOTG Vol. 2, we saw the Ravagers making their official debut into mainstream cinema. Led by Stakar Ogord aka Starhawk, the team of Ravagers includes Martinex, Mainframe, Charlie-27, Aleta Ogord and Krugarr.
After the Guardians of the Galaxy, they are the next best thing when it comes to a team of thieving misfits with hearts of gold. The Ravagers are a separate team of the Marvel Universe but in the absence of the Guardians, they are the only ones that stand a chance to fill the role. Rocket might be getting new members. A recruitment drive might be in order.
Avengers: Infinity War is currently in theaters near you. The movie is directed by Russo brothers and produced by Kevin Feige and a slate of executive producers including Stan Lee, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and Michael Grillo. The script is written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
The cast is truly magnificent as Marvel brought a group of A-List stars under single roof including Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Pratt (Star Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Sebastian Stan (Winter soldier), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon), Vin Diesel (Groot), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Reiner (Hawkeye), Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr. Strange), Benedict Wong (Wong), Tom Holland (Spiderman), Letitia Wright (Shuri), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlett Witch), Karen Gillian (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Dave Bautista (Drax), Paul Bettany (Vision).
The official synopsis of the movie can be read below:
“Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the rest of the Avengers unite to battle their most powerful enemy yet — the evil Thanos. On a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones, Thanos plans to use the artifacts to inflict his twisted will on reality. The fate of the planet and existence itself has never been more uncertain as everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment”.
“As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain”.
