Infinity War Directors Reveal How Avengers 4 Is A Direct Sequel To Winter Soldier

Avengers: Infinity War is coming out in just 11 days and us fans are freaking out with the hype that the movie has bestowed upon us in all this time. It is going to be the massive crossover event that Marvel has been building up to for the last 10 years, as everything that has happened till now will be converging towards an epic conclusion in Infinity War, and later Avengers 4.

Marvel has claimed that Avengers Infinity War and Avengers 4 are two different movies without any major inter-linkages. They will have separate storylines but an untitled fourth Avengers movie is in no way a sequel. The official title for Avengers 4 has been kept tightly under wraps as it’s a huge spoiler which will be revealed at the right time.

Marvel has hired the best guys to handle these two upcoming ensembles. Anthony and Joe Russo brought us 2 best of the top 5 Marvel movies till date, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. They started their journey with Winter Soldier, plotting an intricate and really shocking future for MCU, and most importantly, showing us that Captain America can kick some serious ass!

Then things went to an insane territory with Civil War as the Avengers got divided into two groups – Team Iron Man and Team Cap. Now Avengers: Infinity War will bring all these scattered heroes together to protect Earth from the incoming threat Thanos.

After Infinity War, Avengers 4 will be the end of Phase 3 and after having instilled some drastic changes, it will mark the new beginning of MCU and Phase 4. Here’s what Kevin Feige said:

“Marvel Studios has a new direction filled with “good stories” beyond Phase 3. How we start anew and wherever we go beyond that is a story for another time. This is really about 10 years on, bringing something to a head in a satisfying and unexpected way.”

But the basis of that movie will heavily depend upon Avengers: Infinity War, Civil War, and most importantly The Winter Soldier. All these 4 movies have been handled by the same directors, so even though many other aspects are coming into play in these two Avengers movies, they will still be counted as a story in continuation of Winter Soldier.

The reason for that is pretty obvious as Winter Soldier really began it all by molding Marvel into a very different direction. Then, Civil War brought enough changes itself. So, seeing the mastery of the Russo bros in handling the plot and so many characters at once, Marvel actually let them finish what they started with Winter Soldier.

So we could imagine that Captain America is going to be a huge factor in these two Avengers movies along with other characters as well.

Winter Soldier was the beginning, and Avengers will be the end for a giant plot. Here’s what Joe Russo had to say about this:

“For us, this was the challenge of telling the story but also completing the personal journey that we started as storytellers in Winter Soldier. So the story that began in Winter Soldier and that ends in Avengers 4 is a, there’s a very personal arc there for us. I think you’ll understand our point of view as filmmakers and who we are as people when you watch all four of those movies together.”

The Russos took some big chances in the Winter Soldier, and luckily they were right to trust their instincts, as it was surely the best movie of MCU. Here’s what Anthony Russo said:

“Yes, that was a revelation for us, to be honest with you, because we didn’t know going into Winter Soldier. We knew why we wanted to make the movie. We knew what we loved about the character. We knew where we wanted to take it and what we wanted to do with that movie. But we didn’t know how anybody else in the world would respond. So, having the movie received like that was a validation for Joe and me that we should just stick with our instincts and our passion for the material and run with that. And hopefully, that’s what’s going to translate to audiences.”

So, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 are going to heavily involve Thanos, Iron Man and Captain America, but surprisingly, Thor will actually be the most important Avenger in Infinity War as that is what was revealed by Joe Russo. He said that Thor will actually be the one to have the most screen time in Infinity War:

“Interestingly enough, I’ll start out by saying Thanos, even though he’s not a character that had a huge preexisting story in the Marvel universe. He was a threat but he was not developed in any way up to this point. Thanos has an incredible amount of screen time in this film, in a lot of ways I would say it’s his movie. Our job when we make these films — and what we feel is important to us — is to surprise the audience. We wanted to tell a story that they weren’t expecting, and the story is told from the point of view of a villain, which I think is also really unique and risky for a commercial film that will surprise the audience. I think this is a market where the audience really enjoys innovation and disruption, and we want to do something innovative in this space. So I think Thanos has an incredible amount of screen time, and I think you’ll find that Thor has a really interesting arc in the film. He hasn’t been at the forefront of other Avengers movies but he certainly has a very important role in this film. So I’ll say, Thanos and Thor.”
