Deadpool is a fascinating comic book character as he evokes both laughter and fear. He is one of the most merciless assassins who never misses his target. The portrayal of this iconic character on the big screen is quite different from the comics. He is snazzy and outlandish in both but in comics, his assassin side has been explored well.
Ryan Reynolds’ as lead character totally nailed it in the debut movie. It was a huge box office hit with earnings in excess of $800 million while the production cost was just $60 million. It was the highest grossing R-rated movie ever as well as most profitable X-Men movie. This paved the way for a sequel and the entire team is coming back except Tim Miller who helmed the first movie but parted ways with the studio due to creative differences.
Deadpool 2 is coming out in less than 2 months and till now, we got to see only a little bit of footage through the two Teasers that have come out till now. Finally, the full-fledged Deadpool 2 trailer of the Merc with mouth’s second outing came out last night, and it was nothing but way too f**king awesome! It gave us a good look at the story and told us about the direction the movie is moving in. But, what was really interesting to see was that it revealed so many new characters from the X-Men Universe.
Here are all the characters who have been X-Men in the comics revealed in the trailer:
Cable
His real name (not a made-up name) is Nathaniel Summers who is the son of Scott Summers aka Cyclops and his then-wife Madelyne Pryor. Cyclops left his wife and son when his first love Jean Grey returned after she was believed to be dead. He was trained to become a fearless warrior in the future.
He also has telepathic and telekinetic powers, his abilities along with stiff moral compass make him the perfect foil to Deadpool’s ‘happy go murdery’ persona. He will time-travel to the present and confront Deadpool who will first fight him and then hopefully understand the larger threat which can be defeated only if they join forces. The director of the movie David Leitch revealed that the comic book fans of Cable will be delighted as the movie version of the character is closer to comics. His chemistry with Deadpool is amazing. Here is what he said:
“Cable has a really interesting and complex backstory. Obviously, no film could ever encapsulate the entire backstory, so I think we’ll find the first introduction is about who this character is. When you look at the Cable and Deadpool comic book series, you see how there is banter between them. Whether they are on opposite sides or not, they are definitely formidable to each other. One is frustrating to the other. The chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin is amazing. It’s not unlike what you see in the Cable and Deadpool series”.
Colossus
After the amazing portrayal of Colossus in the first movie, it was obvious that he was returning in the sequel as well. While the trailer did not give us any new footage related to him, but we did get to see Wade grab his metal ass in the X-Mansion.
Negasonic Teenage Warhead
Along with Colossus, she also had a big opening in the first movie so it was a no-brainer that Deadpool 2 will include her as well. This time she has a new look with a better hairdo and an updated X-Men Suit.
Surge
The mutant with the purple hair was a mystery to everyone as she made quite an impression and Deadpool introduced her as a young mutant who could carry on the franchise for the next 10-12 years. Many people have pointed her to be the mutant Surge who appeared in the New X-Men comic book series. Surge is a mutant that has the ability to constantly absorb electricity and channel it into some object or even her hands. So this description fits very well with the mutant we saw in the trailer.
Bedlam
The Cable trailer for DP 2 made it clear that Terry Crews is going to be playing a mutant in the movie, and in the latest trailer we got another scene of him in action. He is one of the first mutants that will join the first version of the X-Force, but people have had difficulties in speculating the character he is playing. According to most people, Crew will be playing Bedlam, who has the ability to project a bio-generated electromagnetic pulse field, which can disrupt all kinds of electrical systems, and may even affect the human brain.
Shatterstar
He also appeared in the ‘Meet Cable’ trailer and the latest one along with Bedlam, and by the look of his helmet and the sword, it was confirmed that this is a version of Shatterstar, who in the comics is a bio-engineered warrior of the Mojoverse, bred for a life of combat, with the power to channel bio-electric shockwaves through his dual sword blades.
Zeitgeist
The fifth mutant we saw in the plane sequence of X-Force formation was not recognized until the latest trailer came out. The latest trailer gave us a full look at him and allowed us to deduce that this is a live-action version of the acid-breathed mutant known as “Zeitgeist.”
Pete
In the trailer, we saw a mysterious photo of a mutant when Deadpool was recruiting mutants for the group he was forming to go up against Cable in order to save the kid. The name on that photo stated that he is a mutant named Peter. This name may suggest that he may very well be Pete Wisdom, a Black Ops agent who also recruited Bedlam into his Black Ops strike force iteration of X-Force, just before Zeitgeist’s team took over.
Domino
We all knew way before the trailers ever released that along with Josh Brolin as Cable, Zazie Beats is also going to join in as Domino. She was only teased in the Wet on Wet teaser, then we got to see a little bit of footage related to her in the Meet Cable trailer, and the latest trailer showed quite a bit of footage of her being in action kicking ass and dropping punch lines.
It is also rumored that we are going to get a secret cameo in the movie other than Stan Lee, and many people believe that it may be Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, and this was sort of confirmed since we saw Wade playing with his chair, while a Barack Obama photo was hung behind him on the wall.
Deadpool is intricately linked to X-Men universe and we will get to see a host of X-Men characters thrown in chaotic and edgier situations with ‘sillier’ tone. Here is what scriptwriters Reese and Wernick had to say:
“I think what we stumbled into was a new tone, but I think we hope to have our own universe that is defined less by characters and timelines and things like that and more by tone. The hope is Deadpool 3 and X-Force and future movies all be this new, consistent, sillier tone. More self-aware tone. And edgier and rated-R tone. We want to be establishing the universe but also focusing on each individual movie and not worrying too much about building a larger threat to the world or a larger plot machination.”
“There is a responsibility we have towards the X-Force universe, and I do think we will not disappoint the fans going into Deadpool 2. Its purpose is not to set up X-Force. It will likely set up X-Force, but the drive of the movie won’t be our eyes on Movie 3.”
The official plot synopsis released by the Fox studio can be read below:
“After surviving a near-fatal bovine attack, a disfigured cafeteria chef (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Mayberry’s hottest bartender while also learning to cope with his lost sense of taste. Searching to regain his spice for life, as well as a flux capacitor, Wade must battle ninjas, the yakuza, and a pack of sexually aggressive canines, as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and flavor – finding a new taste for adventure and earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best Lover”.
