Venom is a popular and one of the darkest Spiderman comics character who is now getting his own Venomverse which is exclusive and separate from MCU. This means that Spiderman won’t be appearing in Venom movies as he is part of the MCU.
He has all the powers and abilities of Spider-Man except his senses and some other perks he gets being in the company of Tony Stark such as the suit of armors designed by Stark industries. But Venom does not need any of it as he has alien superpowers which are beyond anything Spider-Man can imagine. He can generate endless webs with his body. He can adapt to any environments and evolve continually. He can even assume all the powers of his opponents which makes him almost unbeatable monster. Compared to him, Spiderman has limitations.
The character of Venom has been featured before in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy but it was a huge disaster and fans got very angry at the horrible portrayal of such an important character. Later, Raimi revealed that he was totally against bringing Venom in the third movie without setting the stage for him in the first two movies, but due to excessive studio interference, he was left with no choice. But I guess bygones are bygones now.
Coming back to the Venom movie. Tom Hardy has been roped in to play the leas, he was Bane in Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises”. The first trailer for Sony’s upcoming Venom movie just came out recently, and while it did not give us much, we still got a hint of everything that has been going on in this trailer and will happen in the movie. Here is a list of Easter Eggs, references, and takeaways from the comics that were spotted in the Venom trailer.
Carlton Drake
In the trailer, we saw Riz Ahmed in a black suit and it is believed that he is playing Carlton Drake who is the head of Life Foundation in the comics. By the looks of it, he is playing the same role in the movie as well. There was a speculation that Riz is playing Carnage but it was clarified and now it is confirmed.
The Life Foundation
The director of the movie has mentioned that the movie has taken a lot of inspiration from the Lethal Protector comic. In that comic, the Life Foundation is a shadowy survivalist group that the world will end in a nuclear holocaust.
In the movie, it seems that Eddie Brock is trying to investigate this foundation in order to dig up dirt on the shady things this organization is up to. That’s probably where Eddie comes into contact with the Venom Symbiote that the Life Foundation acquired from what looks like a crash site in the trailer.
The Symbiote
We only get a brief look at the Symbiote that turns Eddie Brock into Venom. By the looks of the trailer it seems that Eddie is suffering from some sort of trauma or even cancer in the movie as suggested that he is under CT scan, and then he comes into contact with the Symbiote at the Life Foundation. When this would happen, the trauma will be cured through the Symbiote and he will turn into an anti-hero we are familiar with.
No Spider-Man
The Venom Symbiote as we know in the comics found Peter Parker aka Spider-Man as the first host and was later transferred to Eddie Brock when Peter got rid of it after realizing what he was turning into.
Now, since Spider-Man will not be in this movie even though some rumors suggest that Tom Holland will have a cameo, this movie and universe are being built without Spider-Man and Tom Hardy will be at the center of it, so the Venom Symbiote will find Eddie Brock to be the first host in this Universe.
Eddie Brock the reporter
In the comics, Eddie Brock has a very short-lived career as a reporter, and here in the trailer as mentioned above, we see Eddie sort of investigating the Life Foundation and try to dig out some dirt on the shady operations followed by Life in the movie.
That’s where he might come into contact with the Symbiote as we can see in a ‘still’ from the trailer that the Symbiote is in the research facility of the company. After that he might be made up and that would lead us into the bike action sequence that we saw in the trailer as Eddie might be trying to escape and meets with an accident and brought back to the facility to run tests on him and even experiment on him since he has come into contact with the Symbiote. This is where everything might go wrong and we see Brock turning into Venom towards the end of the trailer.
Ann Weying
We only get a quick look at Michelle Willaims in the trailer who is supposed to be playing Ann Weying in the movie. In the comics Ann is a lawyer who develops an unhealthy relationship with Eddie Brock, and then becomes She-Venom as she also comes into contact with the Venom Symbiote being with Brock. She first appeared in Spiderman comics titled The Amazing Spiderman #375 as the ex-wife of Eddie Brock, a successful lawyer turned into Bride of Venom.
Here in the movie, she and Brock are said to be exes and she might turn into one of the villains of the movie if not a love interest for Eddie.
More Symbiotes
As we know from the comics Venom is an alien Symbiote that crashes on Earth. The planet it is from is full of many Symbiotes and since this movie is based on the Lethal Protector storyline, it will feature at least one more Symbiote if not more to oppose Hardy’s Venom.
In the Lethal Protector storyline, the Life Foundation creates more Symbiotes which are spawned from Venom as they believe that a big threat to the planet is coming. But these 5 Symbiotes named, Agony, Rage, Riot, Lasher, and Scream don’t play well and end up causing all sorts of Havoc. This could happen in the movie as well and Tom Hardy’s Venom could turn into the savior of the city.
But before you check out Venom this year, you must know the background of the comic book plot adapted for the movie narrative. Here is a brief summary of the events unfolded:
“Before the story begins, Venom makes an agreement with Spider-Man that they will leave each other alone, on the condition that Venom commits no crimes. Venom then moves from New York City to San Francisco and takes up with a group of Californian mole people. Shortly thereafter the father of one of Venom’s victims seeks him out with a group of super-powered mercenaries to take revenge. Spider-Man, seeing misleading coverage of Venom on television, heads to San Francisco to confront him and instead winds up fighting along side Venom against five new offspring of the Venom Symbiote: Scream, Phage, Riot, Lasher, and Agony.”
The official description released by the studio is as follows:
“One of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom. Venom is a film that centers around the popular Spider-Man villain Venom. Plot details are unknown but the project is the first in a series of Marvel comic book adaptations based on Spider-Man antiheroes/villains that Sony is planning. It’s unclear if the Venom solo movie will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or if it will involve Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Venom represents the fifth Marvel comic book movie scheduled for release in 2018″.
Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer, set to hit theaters on October 5, 2018. The other cast members include Michelle Williams as Anne Weying aka She Venom, Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake, Jenny Slate, Scott Haze, Woody Harrelson. It is written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. Can’t wait to see Venom solo movie on the big screen as whatever we have seen, the movie is poised to do well at the box office.
