The Men In Black Franchise Is Coming Back With A New Director

Men in Black is not just one of the funniest Spy movie franchises, but it is also an alien movie franchise which is actually better than the ‘Alien’ franchise itself. From 1997 to 2012, we saw the Men in the Black trilogy starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as the main stars of the franchise, adding Josh Brolin in the third movie as well.

All three movies managed to entertain the audiences very well impressed the critics enough and at the same time, also made a huge impact at the box office. The first Men in Black made a hefty $589 Million at a budget of just $90 Million, Men in Black 2 made a good $441 Million at a budget of $140 Million and Men in Black 3 nailed it with a worldwide earning of $624 Million with a budget of $225 Million.

This successful franchise managed to make a big enough impact, and it was not very surprising Sony announced the relaunch of the Men in Black franchise. Sony revealed last month that the first movie of this relaunched franchise will come out on June 14, 2019. Now, the studio has taken another step forward with this upcoming movie and turned the fantasy of the fans into a reality, by releasing potential plot details of the movie and seeking the best directors in Hollywood to helm the movie.

According to ‘Deadline’, the studio is pretty sure about F. Gary Gray to helm the first part of this upcoming movie franchise. Gray is an amazing director as he promised a great experience with Straight Outta Compton in 2015 and delivered on it, and he totally killed it with The Fate of the Furious as the movie went on to make over a $1 Billion at the worldwide box office. Fast 8 proved that he is a money maker and Straight Outta Compton proved that he has the ability to please the critics as well.

If Gary Grey does end up taking this job, he will be working with the Iron Man script writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum. While the studio was on their back foot throughout the last year, as they only managed to do good with Spider-Man: Homecoming, they got a new box office hit with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. With the movie getting a good response from the audience and the critics and earning a good hefty sum of money on the box office, they are hoping this coming reboot franchise to be their savior in the future.

The legendary pair of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones was the stand out for this franchise, but since their partnership has now run its course, the studio will now be looking to cast new actors to take up the lead. The reboot of this franchise will probably be handled in the same way Universal handled Jurassic World. Men in Black will feature new characters, reference the existence of the old trilogy but the characters of the old trilogy will not be featuring in the relaunch, at least not initially.

Yes, the franchise is stepping into a new direction but the movies will more or less be the same at the core. The fun and adventure will be maintained. Just like the original comic books from Lowell Cunningham and Sandy Carruthers, this rebooted franchise will have the main emphasis on a secret organization that is tasked with policing the alien population on Earth.

Along with this franchise, Sony is looking to make good with the Spider-Man spinoffs they have been working on, as this year we are going to see Tom Hardy in the Venom movie, and the following year will feature a movie about Black Cat and Silver Sable.  Along with the Spider-Man universe, Sony is planning to bring in a ‘Bloodshot’ franchise inspired by Valiant comics, starring Vin Diesel. Sony plans to make 5 movies in this franchise as well.

Men in Black

The future of the studios does look bright but is these upcoming movies do end up failing, Sony will follow the fate of 21st Century Fox as most of their Assets will be bought by different studios.

The new Men in Black movie will hit the theatres on June 14, 2019.
