Here’s Everything We Need To Know About The Upcoming Black Widow Movie

The fans have finally been heard as Marvel is moving forward with a Black Widow movie and this is what the fans have been asking for since Phase 1. Till now Marvel has been pretty vague about it saying that it is something that they have been planning for but waiting for the right time to move to the development phase.

Recently, The God of Marvel comics, Stan Lee attended Supernova Comic-Con in Brisbane, Australia where he was asked about the possibility of a solo Black Widow movie. He said ‘funny you should ask that’. He assured the fans that there will be a Black Widow movie 100%. He made a similar comment about T’Challa when nobody knew except comic-book fans who Black Panther was.

Well, as it was announced recently, that Black Widow movie has finally moved to the development stage, we can start to expect that what are we going to get in this movie. Till now, Marvel has catered to audiences of all kinds making family-friendly movies that are full of heart and humor and are also packed with lots of Superhero action.

A solo Black Widow movie could mean that and so much more! Scarlet Johansson could be in line for a huge pay cheque now as she is going to star in her first ever solo movie set up within the MCU. Her character was introduced back in 2010, in Iron Man 2, and since she has appeared in 5 team up movies, and the upcoming 2 Avengers movies will bring her total to 7 MCU movies.

Working with Marvel, Johansson has grown so big in Hollywood that she is currently one of the highest paid actresses. Starring in a solo movie will only add a huge sum to her wealth as she can now demand an even bigger pay cheque, and Marvel will be happy to fulfill her demands since Black Widow is a movie fans have wanted to see for so long. There are rumors that her base price now stands at $25 Million.

Marvel has hired Jac Schaeffer to pen the script of the movie. Schaeffer has worked on the hit TV show Black List and has the capability to do justice with the movie. It is not clear that which direction is Marvel looking to take the movie in right now, but given the caliber of Schaeffer, Marvel could be eying at their first ever R-Rated movie in the MCU. Fans have wanted to see a buddy team up movie with Black Widow teaming up with Hawkeye telling us what the hell actually happening in Budapest. But, it may or may not be the case.

The actress Scarlett Johansson is totally on board for a solo Black Widow movie, infact she has been asking for it from Marvel studios but they were not very serious. Here is what she said:

“I really like playing Natasha, playing the Black Widow in The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America: Civil War. It’s been an interesting journey, to take a character and grow it over these years, and peel the layers back and be able to, as you do in life, grow with this person. It’s a character that’s really enigmatic and has an amazing origins story, so there’s a lot for me to play off of.”

“I don’t know if I have the capacity for it. I think the fans were adamant about it, it could be done. It should be done, probably. It’d have to be done the right way, though. It’d really have to be its own standalone and its own style and its own story. But there’s a lot of great stuff that you could do with it. It could just be awesome.”

She added that fans adore her character as it’s “part of the fun of the Marvel franchise, they discover little references that they knew from the comics and stuff” when they piece all these movies together.

With Fox beginning a trend of hitting R-Rated comic book movies with Deadpool and Logan, this could easily be Marvel’s chance to enter the R-Rated genre. Black Widow actually seems to be the perfect candidate for the R-Rated genre. Just imagine a spy movie with a great and mature storyline having kick-ass action sequences. A movie like Atomic Blonde is a big example of how well an R-Rated female-centric spy movie could do! That mixed with Marvel’s brand image could help the movie accomplish wonders.

But, Marvel could see this as a risk to spoil their name since they have been catering to families till now, and we are used to seeing a PG-13 Black Widow for 8 years, and now all of a sudden, her going R-Rated could be a little damaging for the franchise. Well, it has its pros and cons, but Marvel has marketed whatever they have made in a great way every time, and whatever Marvel sells, we buy! So, they should go on with the R-Rated project.

All we know is that Marvel is looking for a possible 2020 release for this movie since they have already hired a writer. The cast of the movie is not confirmed, and we are not even sure that the movie will be set up Post Avengers 4 or as a prequel like Captain Marvel. Rest of the cast for the movie is not yet confirmed, but looking at the trend Marvel follows, we would surely get someone to team up with Widow.

Many directors are interested in directing this movie. If Marvel will look for directing a family friendly movie then they might have already found the perfect guy, as Thor: Ragnarok director, Taika Waititi is very keen to direct the movie. Here’s what he said:

“In all honesty, I reckon I could probably bring something pretty unique to any of the franchises. So, I’d love to see Black Widow. I’d like to see Black Widow as something crazy and a bit funnier than we expect it to be. Because we know her story and it’s very sullen and very dark and her history is very dark. But! What’s the funny version of that? What’s the more entertaining version of that?

I really go for the underdog. And I think there’s a way in with any of the characters. You just have to find it and find what honors what’s already there with the source material but also brings it into a more entertaining form for the audience.”

There are two ways to look at the Black Widow movie in the works – Firstly, the idea of Black Widow solo movie is fun and will get Marvel fans totally psyched and exited. Secondly, the idea of a comedy seem out of place with Black Widow in it, as one would imagine a female version of Bourne Ultimatum kinda movie for her. But Taika Waititi has prove that he is this master film-maker who got strands of comedy work extremely well in Ragnarok as well. Due to him, we now know that Chris Hemsworth aka God of Thunder has got this amazing knack for comedy as well.

In the DCEU, we saw the movie based on the Amazonian goddess Wonder Woman, it was huge hit and now the sequel of the movie is underway with much higher budgets and freedom. This has definitely put pressure on MCU to do a female superhero movie and they announced Captain Marvel instead of Black Widow who has been one of the founding members of “The Avengers” and been there from day one. Infact, the opinion poll done by an entertainment agency Fandango for the USA Today revealed that Marvel fans overwhelmingly are in favor of Black widow solo movie (48%), followed by Vision (15%), Falcon (12%), Hawkeye (10%), War Machine (8%) and Scarlett witch (7%).

So, let’s see who Marvel brings in for this movie and what direction will they take it in. we could be in for the first R-Rated movie in MCU (please God make it happen). All we know is that it is going to be bad-ass!
