Not many would call themselves a fan of the Star Wars franchise if they were not aware of the name – Luke Skywalker and the guy behind the legend, Mark Hamill. In 1977, Hamill allowed himself under George Lucas’s tutelage trying to get a shot at his big break in Hollywood.
George Lucas’s Star Wars has seen nothing but an experiment doomed to fail from the very beginning. Hamill played the legendary Skywalker Jedi Master in the movie. He was just trying to make a living out of nothing. The movie never had any hopes of the movie becoming Hollywood’s first true blockbuster. But it did.
Star Wars did not just break records; it set a new bar for other movies to compare themselves with. Mark Hamill became a household name. Hamill then went on to star in several other Star Wars installments.
Apart from the Prequel trilogy, Hamill has had roles and appearances in other movies of the franchise. The Last Jedi Trilogy was special for him.
The movie focused on the resurgence of the Jedi Order from the ashes of Civil War between the Galactic Empire’s Successor The First Order and the remnants of the Resistance led by Luke Skywalker’s sister Leia Organa. Let’s try to understand the journey of Luke Skywalker:
When the Empire got defeated, Luke dedicated himself towards restoring the Jedi order but he was not a willing participant. He started a quest to seek secrets of Jedi spread across the galaxy. He broadened his search and found other force cults.
It has been eloquently put in Ken Liu’s novel titled ‘The Legend of Luke Skywalker’ which goes like this:
“There are a thousand names for the truth. It doesn’t matter what we call it, only that it is true.”
He got exposed to the balance of the force. He learned about the prophecy of the Chosen One, the one who would restore the balance. He managed to bring some reform to ‘The Jedi order’ and kept track of the Chosen One. He concluded Ben was the Chosen one and as a result, he focused on training Han and Leia’s son.
But he was oblivious to the influence of dark side on Ben once he found out that Darth Vader was his Grand-father. This led Ben to the dark path and he became Kylo Ren (we still don’t know how that happened).
Luke has not given up on his fight for restoring balance, fight evil etc. but he just has a new way of going about it. It has been eloquently put in Ken Liu’s novel titled ‘The Legend of Luke Skywalker’ and fans should read it.
It goes like this:
“There are more ways to serve good than by fighting and confronting evil. You also serve the good by standing guard and maintaining pools of tranquility and peace; you also rebuke evil by showing that there is another way than death and violence. We are all connected through the Force, and there’s a time and place to rest, as well as a time and place to act.”
The Force Awakens only showed glimpses of the legendary Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. It was only a blink and miss scene at the very end of the movie when Rey lands on the planet Ahch to find out the whereabouts of the Skywalker.
The Last Jedi is different. It did not just feature a full-fledged role for Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker. It also gave Mark Hamill another hidden role no one would have ever imagined.
That is right fellas. Mark Hamill does not just play Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He has a secret double role no one could have made out. Even if you saw the movie, twice or even thrice, it would still be extremely difficult to spot Hamill’s second role in the movie.
Do you want to know what role Hamill plays that The Last Jedi wants to stay a secret?
Let us take you back to The Last Jedi’s Canto Bight. The gambling planet houses arms dealers and slave traders from throughout the galaxy. The planet is one big casino where the customers gamble away their limitless wealth at the cost of the planet’s native populace.
Finn, BB-8, and Rose enter Canto Bight in search of the Master Code-breaker to hack into the First Order’s shields and save the resistance.
But as the trio explores the surroundings, BB-8 can be seen encountering a short, drunk and grumpy alien that is trying to insert coins into BB-8’s slots. Enter Mark Hamill.
Hamill voiced the grunts and the drunken screams of Dobbu Scay, the alien that thinks BB-8 to be a slot machine, as he starts inserting coins into the battle droid.
Fans first noticed Mark Hamill’s dual role when his name suddenly popped up twice in the credits scene at the end of the movie. Rian Johnson confirmed the character was an anagram of the movie’s editor’s name Bob Duscay.
But it was Lucas Films Story Group Executive that finally confirmed Hamill’s role in voicing the CGI generated maniac.
“I said I’d love to do a CGI thing, and he said sure,” Hamill explained about the new role. “And I got to go to the set of the casino and see in detail 150 extras in jaw-dropping costumes.”
Dobbu Scay inadvertently helps the trio of Finn, Rose, and BB-8 escape Canto Bight when Finn and Rose encounter prison guards while trying to escape. BB-8 uses the same coins Dobbu Scay had inserted into the droid as projectiles that catch the guards off guard and gives the heroes enough time to escape the planet.
However, Hamill lending his voice to an animated character is not new in Hollywood. He already does it on several prime time TV shows. He has even voiced the Joker in several of the Batman films. Dobbu Scay is just a byproduct of his prolific voice-over career.
What do you think about The Last Jedi’s hidden secret about Hamill’s secret double role?
