The Flash Show-Runners Explain Why The Show Chose Non-Speedster Villain For Season 4

In the first two episodes of Flash season 4, Barry Allen returned to the Central city after spending six months inside the Speed-force, but he was either drawing alien symbols or babbling riddles which did not make any sense. He was mumbling about Oliver Queen, stars being loud etc. which led Caitlin to conclude that he is suffering from some kind of Dementia as he spent 10,000 years not just 6 months into the speed force. As the Speed-force transcends time, it is quite possible that he saw glimpses of both past and future. He recalled the death of his mother which confirmed he saw the past. He is now again the fastest man alive who is more powerful than ever.

But things will only get a whole lot crazier as the new villain who is known as “The Thinker” will come to the Central city to make things very difficult for Team Flash. He ain’t a speedster with a sinister agenda like Savitar or Zoom, instead he is the smartest person alive who will beat Flash and Cisco at their own game.

Clifford DeVoe aka The Thinker is playing the main villain of season 4. The actor is famous for his role in NCIS, The 100 etc. He is no stranger to larger than life characters. He will be the first ever non-speedster villain on the show. Although, the show has featured rogues like Mirror master, The Trickster etc. but they were just for an episode.

Instead of speed, he will use his brain to outwit Flash. The battle is called as The Fastest Man Alive vs The Fastest Mind Alive. He was also caught in particle accelerator explosion and became super intelligent meta-human who intend to solve everything wrong with the humanity. He will have help from “The Mechanic” who is another DC villain. She will be the right-hand person of “The Thinker”. Her character has been described as “the truest of true believers who’ll stop at nothing to help him implement his plan to fix humanity”.

Todd Helbing, the show-runner of The Flash, recently spoke to TVLine and said:

“The Thinker literally is the smartest guy on the planet, so there’s a lot of chess pieces that he’s moving around simultaneously. As our team is figuring out who he is and what they think the plan is, there’s a lot of fun as we show the audience information and then have our team catch up to that information or surpass it. It’s a big mystery.”

In an interview with Comicbook.com, Todd Helbing had this to say:

“I think having Zoom and then followed up by Savitar, you know, I can understand that feeling. It’s because trying to reinvent, you know, like a new power for an evil speedster or what they can do … Like we can’t have it just who’s faster for the entirety of a series.”

He added on the possibilities on having a non-speedster:

“There are certainly speedsters in the cannon of Flash that we want to explore and we want on the show and everybody… Like Reverse Flash to me personally is one of my favorite villains, one of my favorite speedsters, so I’d love that guy to pop up now and then, you know what I mean? But I think it was refreshing, and it’s just been a lot of fun this year not having to constantly come up with new ideas of how a speedster could pose a threat to Barry. So, it’s fun, and it’s new, and it’s a new challenge, but I think having speedsters in the mythology of the show is never going to change.”

Till now Flash has been pushed to his physical limits, Thinker will test his mental limits. He is extremely calculating and would be terrifying than Barry’s former adversaries who were all speedsters. The Flash knew how to deal with his kind but “The Thinker” is the fastest mind alive who will hit him hard and he would not even realize that he is down. Well, we can’t wait to see Flash and The Thinker coming face to face. CHEERS!
