DC and Marvel’s competition has always been healthy and good natured. Where one comic is a bit dark in the taste, the other has been a bit more whimsical. Stan Lee, the publisher of the comics in an interview talked about how he felt his competition was and how much fun he and his team had in making fun of DC.
The Cameo Guy in all the Marvel films also gave an idea about who actually his audience is, about how the Marvel comics don’t actually set a target audience, but everyone who is literate and can read is their target audience.
The comics have stuff for all age groups, be it a 7 year old, who’s in their for the underwears in the costume or who likes the colors or be it an adult like him who is there for the subtleties of the stories and the light intonations put in between serious scenes. Stan Lee tells that to have a target audience is actually limiting your readership and how he finds that people more or less have a common taste, which is quite similar to his. Because of this, it is easy for him to know what the audience would love.
Not just that, Lee goes on to say, “Miserable” when he’s asked how his competition is, he says, “They’re doing the best they can, bless their innocent little hearts. We used to have a lot of fun with them when we started outselling them. And I know this because we have friends who work for that company and we’d get these reports. They’d start having conferences: how come Marvel’s selling so much better? They studied our books, and they’d say, ‘You know, I noticed they use a lot of red on their covers. Maybe that’s it.’ And they would start putting a lot of red on their covers. The minute we would learn of that, we would take all the red off our covers. And our books still sold better, and that would drive them crazy.”
All the narcissism aside, Stan’s humorous attitude and his optimism about how the comics should be sure tells us why the Marvel comics, as well as the MCU, is doing so well.
