The Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds was undoubtedly an unmitigated disaster both in terms of film-making and box-office collections. It was a dud of massive proportions which almost ended the consideration to ever think of doing a Green Lantern movie in the future. But the wait is over, DC has confirmed that Green Corps will be part of the upcoming Justice League movie. It’s been termed as the Lethal weapon in space.
On the other hand, Deadpool was a giant commercial hit, the global box office collections were in excess of $800 million while the cost of production was less than $60 million, making it the most successful superhero movie in the entire X-men franchise. The second movie is already in the production and the studio has expressed its intent in creating a vibrant Deadpool franchise as it’s proved to be a cash cow. But Deadpool didn’t become an international phenomenon overnight, it took years of hard work and dedication.
Recently, at THR Awards Chatter Podcast, Ryan Reynolds revealed that he was co-scripting Deadpool at the same time he was shooting Green Lantern scenes. He said
“The weird plot twist was, somehow, some way, Deadpool got reinvigorated at Fox while [Green Lantern] was happening. What a lot of people don’t know is [writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick] flew to New Orleans and, while I was shooting Green Lantern, we were actually all together writing Deadpool.”
He added:, “We were breaking the story of the original Deadpool movie in a house that was being paid for by Green Lantern‘s dime.”
The important thing to note here is Ryan Reynolds wanted Green Lantern to succeed at the box-office and he did everything he could to make it work. Well, he got a shot at redemption and he took it. There is no going back for him now.
