Vin Diesel Reveals An Interesting Detail About GOTG: Vol 2

The first Guardians Of The Galaxy was a surprise hit for Marvel Studios. Not only did the movie feature characters they had never been familiar with, the audience also openly accepted that a talking tree being called Groot who spoke three syllables and a smart mouthed raccoon called Rocket were the scene-stealers of the entire movie. Vin Diesel, one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars sacrificed screen time and instead took on the voice over for Groot, a fact that few knew about at the time.

The last time Groot was seen on screen, the humanoid tree from the stars had been transformed into a tiny sapling, and not surprisingly, the character and his arc have become one of the anticipated aspects of the sequel. Vin Diesel sat down for an interview with Collider where her he talked about his Guardians character and the differences one should expect from the film.

“He couldn’t be more naive as Baby Groot,” Diesel explained. “I always think of the Groot that we saw on the first Guardians as a college-level Groot, so he’s not fully grown yet, but he’s a man. And once he sacrifices himself at the end of the movie, now he has to start all over, so to speak, but we’re gonna see this goofy, adorable, baby Groot thing running around the screen and just learning as he goes.”

Marvel Studio Head Kevin Feige had also discussed in a past interview about what Groot will be like:

“He remembers,” Feige said. “He’s not mentally a baby, he is still Groot…I sort of equate it to Spock circa the end of Search for Spock and The Voyage Home.”

Director James Gunn  and Diesel himself had assured fans that baby Groot would have a voice suited for the character and not just Vin Diesel’s low baritone one. How they would do that still remains a mystery.
