Here’s A First Look Of Marvel’s New IRON MAN- Riri Williams

Robert Downey Jr. may rule the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Iron Man, but that may not be the case in the comic world. Marvel had announced in July that Tony Stark was retiring his moniker of Iron Man and handing it over to a fifteen-year-old girl named Riri Williams with a different name called Iron Heart. It was a continuation of Marvel’s tradition of evolving males superheroes into female ones- Thor’s hammer  was introduced to a woman and Kamala Khan, a Muslim superhero became  Ms. Marvel.

Williams was first introduced to comic book readers in Invincible Iron Man #12 where she remodels an old Iron Man suit. What her story would be about was unknown, though many speculated that it would include Tony Stark as a mentor. Time magazine got the first scoop of the new Iron Man or Iron Heart as Invincible Iron Man writer, Brian Micheal Bendis gave an exclusive first preview of the new superhero.

““She’s smarter than Tony… As we say in the story: high intellects, out of frustration, can sometimes retreat into their own world. This young woman has had that burden but she also has a grounded parent who helped her get to this point. But she also has had a terrible tragedy that has informed her more than anything… Some of the intellectual characters at Marvel get to the point where they want to conquer the world and make it over in their own image. The fact that Riri Williams, even, after all, she has been through, does not make her mother the hero of this story. And we need to celebrate that kind of thing more anyhow.”

Marvel’s bold move of putting a black woman in place of a beloved superhero was both a controversial  and brave move. Marvel Comics took this move as a way to diversify and make it more relevant to current  social climate.
