New Star Wars Timeline Reveals 9 Major Movie and Show Eras

The Star Wars franchise has always been among the coolest ones around. The sequel trilogy is where they pick up where the original trilogy left off after traveling through time with the prequels. And they’ve been filling in the gaps with a ton of stories from all over the canon, dating all the way back thousands of years. Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, unveiled a brand-new Star Wars timeline at the current Star Wars Celebration.

All the movies, TV shows, books, video games, and comic books are set in one of its nine distinct eras. Although they didn’t specify exact dates, we can probably determine when each era begins and ends on our own.

Dawn of the Jedi

At the recent Star Wars Celebration, a new era called “Dawn of the Jedi” was announced, taking place over 25,000 years before the events of The Phantom Menace. This era explores the discovery of the Force and the emergence of the first Jedi. Along with the announcement of this new era, a new film set in the “Dawn of the Jedi” era was revealed, to be directed by James Mangold, who directed Logan. The movie is expected to focus on the “first Jedi to wield the force” and has been described as a biblical epic within the Star Wars universe.

The OId Republic

Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm and Star Wars in 2012 marked the end of exploring The Old Republic in canon. The period, which depicts the early days of the Jedi, holds immense potential for storytelling, but no official project in that era has been announced since then. The only known project in development set in The Old Republic is the upcoming video game remake, Knights of the Old Republic. However, it remains to be seen whether the game will be considered canon or not.

The High Republic

The High Republic era is the next in the Star Wars franchise, covering the golden age of the Jedi’s reign over the galaxy. The era has mainly been explored through literature, but rumors have circulated about a theatrical film set in this era. However, no recent updates have been provided about the project. Disney+’s upcoming series, The Acolyte, will be the first live-action project set in the High Republic era, specifically during the final days of the era, roughly 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace. Details about the series have been kept under wraps, but it’s expected to focus on the emergence of the dark side of the Force and explore the Sith’s origins.

Fall of the Jedi

The Fall of the Jedi era is focused on the events of the prequel trilogy, featuring the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker and the eventual downfall of the Republic depicted in Revenge of the Sith. This era was previously known as the Prequel-Era or The Clone Wars, but is now officially known as the Fall of the Jedi era. This era is essential for understanding the overall narrative of the Star Wars franchise, as it establishes the backstory for the original trilogy. Fans can dive into the tumultuous events of the Clone Wars, follow Anakin’s descent to the dark side, and witness the rise of the Galactic Empire under Emperor Palpatine’s rule.

Reign of the Empire

The Reign of the Empire era covers the period between the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy. It focuses on the construction of the Death Star, political instability throughout the galaxy, and the eventual formation of the Rebel Alliance. This era is explored in various Star Wars titles, including Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Bad Batch, and Andor, the latter of which was showcased at Star Wars Celebration during its second season announcement.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story depicts the Rebel Alliance’s mission to steal the Death Star plans, while Obi-Wan Kenobi focuses on the Jedi Master’s time in hiding on Tatooine during the Empire’s reign. The Bad Batch follows a group of elite clone troopers as they navigate the aftermath of the Clone Wars, while Andor explores the origins of Cassian Andor, a character from Rogue One.

Age of the Rebellion

Age of the Rebellion is the era where the Star Wars journey began back in 1977. It spans four years and features the Rebel Alliance’s fight against the Empire. The timeline covers the major events that include the destruction of the Death Star in A New Hope to the fall of the Empire in Return of the Jedi. This period is concise but still beloved by fans as it showcases the epic fight between good and evil that captivated audiences and spawned a massive franchise. This era of Star Wars is significant, as it’s where the original trilogy takes place, and it introduced iconic characters such as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo. For many fans, this era marks the beginning of their love for the franchise and the foundation of a lifelong fandom.

The New Republic

The New Republic era takes place right before the events of the sequel trilogy, where the New Republic gains power while the remnants of the Empire scatter across the galaxy. This era is most popularly known for the MandoVerse, which includes The Mandalorian and its connected series Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, and Skeleton Crew. As of now, it appears that Dave Filoni’s newly revealed MandoVerse crossover film will serve as the culmination of the New Republic era.

Rise of the First Order

In the Rise of the First Order era, the Empire successor emerges with the help of Snoke, Kylo Ren, and General Hux. It marks a period of destruction and tyranny, but also a rebirth of the Force and the Jedi. This era is covered in the sequel trilogy – The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker – as well as the Disney XD animated series, Star Wars Resistance.

New Jedi Order

At Star Wars Celebration, the New Jedi Order era was announced, with little information revealed about this new period in the Star Wars timeline. However, it has been confirmed that the first project to occupy this era will be Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars film. This upcoming film will see the return of Daisy Ridley’s character Rey Skywalker, who will be starting a new Jedi Order.
