Marvel Movies Are Apparently Getting Worse, According to Rotten Tomato Data

Marvel fans, it’s time to have a heart-to-heart about the state of the MCU. According to recent Rotten Tomatoes data, it seems like our beloved Marvel movies might be losing their touch. The scores for Phase 4 of the MCU show that it’s been a bit of a mixed bag for critics. Sure, we got massive hits like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, but there was also a dark spot on the horizon. Eternals, the newest installment, managed to scrape up a mediocre 47% rating, the MCU’s first “Rotten” film.

And, to make matters worse, Phase 4 had the most movies scoring less than 75%, the threshold where a movie is considered “Fresh” and “Certified Fresh.” It’s not all bad news, though. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which kicked off Phase 5, currently boasts the same average critical score as Eternals. But, Phase Three was where Marvel hit its peak, with movies like Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 scoring incredibly high with critics. Only one movie out of the 12 released in Phase Three fell below the 80% line, and even that one, Captain Marvel, still managed to earn a “Fresh” score of 79%.

Critics aside, fans have also been questioning the quality of the MCU lately. Even Disney is reportedly concerned, with CEO Bob Iger suggesting that Marvel Studios is producing too many sequels and should slow down their content production to draw viewers in. He’s not wrong, though. With so many sequels, prequels, and spin-offs, it’s easy to feel like we’re getting the same thing over and over again. But, it’s not all bad news. Iger also believes that there are countless new characters in the MCU that can shed light on going forward, and we’re excited to see who they are. Phase 5 is already underway, and it’s charging full steam ahead with Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 and The Marvels set for releases this May and July, respectively.

And, in 2024, we’re getting even more MCU goodness with the highly-anticipated Captain America 4, Thunderbolts, and Mahershala Ali’s Blade reboot. Captain America: New World Order is especially exciting because it’s rumored to star Harrison Ford as General Thaddeus E. “Thunderbolt” Ross. Who wouldn’t want to see Indiana Jones himself in the MCU? And, Blade’s reboot has faced multiple delays and changes ahead of filming, but we’re confident that it will be worth the wait.

Finally, Deadpool 3, the MCU’s first R-rated film, is set to conclude Phase 5 with its November 2024 release. So, while it’s true that the quality of the MCU might be declining, we’re still excited to see what the future holds. As fans, we know that there will always be ups and downs, but we’ll stick with our beloved franchise no matter what. And, if you need to catch up on the MCU, all of the films and shows are available for streaming on Disney+.
