James Gunn Hints At Potential Marvel-DC Crossover
A Marvel-DC crossover has been a dream of many fans for years. There is even a comic book series called JLA/Avengers that had the two superhero teams cross over in the early 2000s. Although it may seem impossible for the two giants of superhero entertainment to collaborate, DC Studios CEO and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn believes that a crossover between the two companies is “a possibility.”
During the press tour for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn spoke with Fandango about the potential for a Marvel and DC crossover. Having worked on both sides of the superhero coin, Gunn noted that “there’s always the possibility” for a crossover. However, he added that the focus right now is on making each respective universe as strong as possible. Gunn, who is now DC Studios CEO, added that he is “very close friends” with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and that they talk all the time.
He believes that while there is some rivalry between the two companies, their shared goal is to “embolden the movie-going experience.” Gunn noted that “a dollar for Marvel is not a dollar less for DC,” and both sides making good superhero movies only bring more audiences to the theaters, serving to benefit both sides. While it may seem like a long shot for a Marvel and DC crossover to happen, Gunn previously revealed back in June 2021 that he has “casually talked” to the top powers at both Marvel and DC about a potential crossover.
He hinted that a crossover is unlikely, but not impossible. Gunn even revealed his dream pitch for a Marvel and DC crossover which involves both his Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad franchises coming together through “a Harley Quinn and Groot movie.” With Marvel rights held by Disney and DC rights by Warner Bros., the negotiations required to navigate the rights and financial issues of a potential crossover would be immense. It is almost impossible for the superhero giants to cross over.
But, Gunn’s recent appointment at DC Studios certainly makes it more of a possibility to get the two sides talking at some point given his close relationship with Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige. Currently, Marvel and DC are focused on bettering their own universes and doing their own thing. However, if the superhero genre were to ever begin to decline, perhaps the two companies could come to the negotiating table. But even after the recent struggles of Ant-Man 3 and the financial disaster of Shazam 2, the genre remains alive and well with plenty of excitement for the future of both franchises.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters on May 5, while James Gunn’s next superhero movie at DC will be Superman: Legacy, which releases on July 11, 2025.
