It’s official – Avatar 2 box office has made an insane amount of money. This settles the debate about how much the movie needed to make in order to break even. The Way of Water follows the story of Jake and Neytiri as they deal with the return of humans to Pandora. The film has received mostly positive reviews from audiences and critics alike and was a huge box office success.
It raked in over $2.3 billion and is now the third highest-grossing movie of all time. Not too shabby, huh? So, how did they make all this money? Well, the movie’s production budget was reportedly $400 million, which is a lot of cash. On top of that, there were additional costs from filming most of Avatar 3 and parts of Avatar 4 concurrently. But even with all those expenses, the movie still made a whopping profit. And that’s not even taking into account the additional revenue generated by the movie’s presence at Disney theme parks.
Before the movie was even released, people were speculating about how much it would need to make in order to break even. Even Cameron himself called Avatar 2 a “massive gamble” on Disney’s part. The reason it cost so much is that they had to invent new technology to make it. They created new performance capture rigs, 3D cameras, underwater filming technology, and a host of CGI advancements, which all contributed to the high budget. But now that they’ve made the necessary technology, they won’t have to spend as much money on it for the follow-up movies.
If Avatar 3, 4, and 5 perform anywhere near as well as The Way of Water, then the franchise will make some serious profits. The visual effects in The Way of Water are absolutely stunning. They are arguably the best to ever be put on a movie screen, but they also took a lot of time and effort to get right. The level of perfection required for the movie’s VFX meant that it needed highly-skilled workers and a lot of time. But it was all worth it in the end, as the movie was a massive success. It’s exciting to think about how much money the upcoming Avatar sequels could make.
With the technology already in place and a successful first movie, the future looks bright for the franchise. Who knows how much money they’ll make next? All in all, The Way of Water was a huge gamble that paid off in a big way for Disney and all involved. It’s a testament to the power of a good story and the importance of investing in new technology.
