The Last of Us Beats House of the Dragon In Streaming Numbers

HBO’s latest post-apocalyptic series, The Last of Us beats House of the Dragon in streaming numbers. The Last of Us, which premiered on January 15, is a television adaptation of the critically acclaimed 2013 video game of the same name. The series has quickly gained popularity and has become HBO’s latest buzzworthy show. Before it, HBO released House of the Dragon, a prequel to the highly successful Game of Thrones series, in August 2022. House of the Dragon had HBO’s biggest series debut, with 10 million viewers internationally tuning in to watch the premiere episode. However, the latest numbers from Nielsen suggest that the post-apocalyptic series is now the more popular series in terms of streaming figures.

Nielsen has confirmed that the first episode of The Last of Us had more streaming figures than HOTD. It debuted at number 6 on the Nielsen streaming charts for the week of January 16 to January 22, the first full week after its premiere, with 837 million minutes viewed. In the same time frame, House of the Dragon had only 741 million minutes viewed. According to HBO, The Last of Us has consistently maintained high viewership figures for each episode since its release, with the first two episodes averaging around 21.3 million viewers across all platforms. These streaming figures only account for viewership on HBO Max and not viewership on cable TV. It is the only HBO Max program to make it onto the top 10 overall Nielsen streaming chart for January 16 to 22, with the rest of the list being dominated by Netflix programming.

Both series have been major successes for HBO. Last of Us has seen viewership numbers increase with each episode, while HOTD has had a fluctuating viewership since its release. Although it still has larger total viewership numbers, The Pedro Pascal series appears to be finding more solid footing through streaming services. The Nielsen stats indicate that The Last of Us is performing better on streaming platforms rather than on live television.

The Last of Us and House of the Dragon have become critically acclaimed, indicating success for both HBO and HBO Max. The latest series has been renewed for a second season, and with four more episodes still to come, the series’ full measure of success is yet to be revealed. However, the first full week of the show’s release alone suggests that The Last of Us could become as successful as HBO’s most recent crowning jewel, Game of Thrones. Although viewership numbers may fluctuate in the coming weeks, it is likely that The Last of Us will continue to perform well for the network.

The game-based series has been praised for its powerful performances, stunning cinematography, and intriguing storyline. The series stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who previously appeared in Game of Thrones. Pascal portrays Joel, a survivor in a world ravaged by a deadly fungal infection, while Ramsey plays Ellie, a young girl who may hold the key to saving humanity. The series explores the human condition and the lengths people will go to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. The Last of Us has garnered widespread acclaim from both fans and critics for its ability to portray complex characters and its emotional storytelling.

House of the Dragon, on the other hand, is a prequel to the highly successful GOT series. The show is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and explores the history of House Targaryen. The series stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, and Olivia Cooke, among others. Although House of the Dragon has had a fluctuating viewership, it has been praised for its stunning visual effects.
