Thor: Love and Thunder is just about to hit Disney+, and it will soon be out on BluRay. So along with it, we’re also getting some extra deleted scenes from the movie. A few days back, a scene from Omnipotence City came out, including an extended look at Zeus’ youngest son, Dionysus. Now there’s another one involving Star-Lord and Mantis.
Well, this scene may have worked if the movie had a longer run time and did not have to rush things to keep its entirety under 2 hours. But it doesn’t add anything to the story, so it’s okay for the movie to have left it out. This movie needed more Guardians, so the scene would have worked in that way. But again, it wouldn’t have contributed anything to the grand narrative.
But we would love to watch the scenes involving the Grandmaster, Eitri, and whichever Goddess Lena Heady played. Here’s why the Grandmaster’s scene was deleted from the film, according to director Taika Waititi himself:
I wrote the thing so when you cut anything it’s a little bit of a challenge to yourself because you’re like, ‘Am I not that good? Should I have seen this coming?’ But every film I’ve done I’ve probably cut the same amount out. When you go into the edit you just never know. A scene on its own could be the most funniest thing or intriguing thing, but sometimes those things if you keep them in will just make the movie screech to a halt. So you have to do what’s best for the film.”
Another reason why there are so many deleted scenes is that there was a compulsion to keep the film under 2 hours. Joanna Robinson of The Ringer-Verse podcast (via ComicBook) revealed that the higher-ups at Marvel Studios kept a mandate upon Taika Waititi to keep the movie less than 2 hours long. So that’s how the movie got ruined.
“Taika having a blank check on this is absolutely not the case. He got more leeway than he got with Ragnarok, but there was a mandate to bring this movie in under two hours. This comes in under two hours and they cut a ton of stuff out of this movie.
Taika is on record as not being in director’s cuts. We know Jeff Goldblum, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey [were supposed to appear] and Simon Russell Beale appeared as Dionysus and had like two lines in this movie but has an above-the-line credit, so he was definitely supposed to be in this more. Gorr was definitely supposed to come in and kill a bunch of other people.”
Well, hopefully, some great deleted scenes will be released soon.
