House of the Dragon: Who is the Crabfeeder?

After watching episode 2, many viewers were left asking who exactly is this vicious villain wearing a terrifying mask. Before his appearance in episode 2, we actually heard of his name being dropped in the first episode itself. It was Corlys Velaryon, aka the Sea Snake, who specifically mentioned him, and after this, we finally saw the horrifying look of Craghas Drahar, aka the Crabfeeder, in episode 2. But who is the Crabfeeder?

Actor Daniel Scott-Smith is playing the part. And he seems to be a much bigger threat than he was in George R.R. Martin’s book – Fire and Blood. Before other show-backstabbing villains reveal their cards, the series builds up the Crabfeeder as a Night King-like villain. But does he possess enough strength to live up to the might of the Night King… or maybe stand up against dragons? Well, we’ll be finding that out very soon. But for now, let’s look at what we already know about him.

As established by Corlys, Craghas Drahar is a Myrish prince who became the admiral Triarchy’s armies. For those who aren’t aware, The Triarchy was an alliance of 3 Free Cities – Myr, Lys, and Tyrosh. And Craghas became the leader of their armies. He led the triarchy to the Stepstones, small islands in the southern Narrow Sea.

Who is the Crabfeeder?

And because he was wiping out the pirates from the Stepstones, King Viserys and his small council members thought that he was doing their work for them. So, they weren’t ready to hear Corlys’s warnings about his threat. They weren’t willing to battle the Crabfeeder and go to war with the free cities. But you guys should be excited because this guy here is going to deliver a massive battle for us. As far as his appearance is concerned, he seems to have some sort of a skin disease that could be similar to Grayscale from Game of Thrones. Or it could merely be burnt skin.

Either way, he is not a man to be trifled with. We saw his pirate victims tied up on the beach as they were all drowned in the rising tides. Being constantly exposed to seawater, these pirates’ skin began to erode. So, they become fodder for the crabs to feed on. This is how Craghas Drahar earned his title of the Crabfeeder, as he basically fed his victims to the crabs. But along with the pirates, he and his men also took down some of Corlys Velaryon’s ships and men.

That’s why Corlys was so pissed at King Viserys for not helping him with the Craghas situation. All his revenue comes from these narrow sea trade routes. And the Crabfeeder was causing a hindrance to all that. So, Corlys took matters into his own hands and teamed up with Daemon at the end of episode 2. As confirmed by the preview for episode 3, Team Daemon and Corlys will take on the Crabfeeder very soon.

Spoilers: What happened in Fire and Blood?

This series is based on Martin’s prequel novel, so we already have an idea of what will happen with the Crabfeeder in the series. In Martin’s book, the Crabfeeder does not have a huge role to play. He is a minor villain who helps Daemon establish his dominance. And even though the second episode has generated a lot of hype around him through some genius makeup and character design, I believe he’ll still play the same kind of role in the series. He probably won’t go on to become an important figure because Daemon is going to take him down! But we can be sure that Daemon vs. the Crabfeeder will be a treat to watch.

According to the books, Daemon and Corlys drive their fleets to the stepstones, where the Crabfeeder has set up his new base. And they wage a secret war against the Triarchy. Ultimately, Daemon kills the vicious Crabfeeder with his Valaryen steel sword called the Dark Sister. And he declares himself King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea. Guess what, the one who gives him the crown is none other than Corlys himself. With this victory, Daemon finally gets the kind of power that he had been seeking all his life. This battle took two years as it started from 106 AC. And Daemon became king of the Stepstones in 108 AC. So, it’s highly likely that the events of House of the Dragon will play out similarly in episode 3 and beyond.

It remains to be seen whether the Crabfeeder gets a bigger role here than he had in Martin’s novel. But one thing is assured, the battle between Daemon and him will be… legendary!
