Obi-Wan Kenobi Explains Why Kylo Ren Was Originally Named Ben Solo

The Star Wars Universe has bounced back from the pit of despair and redundancy as Lucasfilms has finally regained creative control of the franchise from Disney. Now, the franchise is going back to its roots and exploring the reality of what had happened during the time Obi-Wan was hiding on Tatooine. Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place 10 years after the events of Revenge of The Sith and explores a time that has been kept under wraps for a long time in the Star Wars universe. This show, hence, also gives us insight into some amazing things, such as why Kylo Ren was originally named Ben Solo in the sequel trilogy. Let me break down what I mean.

You see, the second episode starts with the kidnapping of Princess Leia. She is supposed to be one of the most important people in the universe and she is stolen away and hidden on the Daiyu. At this time Obi-Wan is one of the last surviving Jedi, who finds himself hiding from the Jedi-hunters. Obi-Wan is hiding on Tatooine to escape the grasp of the empire and his sole mission in life at this point is to keep an eye on Luke Skywalker from a distance. This child is their last hope, the way to the revival of Jedis, and the best part of the lineage of Anakin Skywalker. But during this episode, Obi-Wan is called to action to save Leia and divert his attention from Luke.

Why Kylo Ren Was Originally Named Ben Solo

You see, Obi-Wan was understandably hesitant while contemplating the new request that was being placed in front of him. Even if he is to rescue Princess Leia, he cannot go all out and expose himself to the Sith and the empire. That would nullify everything that the man has been trying to achieve. But Obi-Wan’s kindness wins out in the end against his need for self-preservation and the Jedi master decides to head to the Daiyu. Here is where he first encounters Leia and realizes what he has been sent to rescue and protect. The only issue is that Leia was yet to grasp who this mighty warrior is.

Obi-Wan is only known as Ben to the princess for a considerable while in the episode. As a child, Leia ends up being protected by one of the most powerful Jedi masters who calls himself Ben. This has a very profound effect on Leia’s perception of the name. She starts to associate the name with hope. Only after Leia is safely returned home, she discovered that her savior was named Obi-Wan Kenobi and was a Jedi Master. At this point, Leia has already attached herself to the name Ben.

Kylo Ren was originally named Ben Solo

Hence it does not come as any surprise that she chooses to name her child ‘Ben Solo’ the first chance she gets. Moreover, Leia grew to trust Obi-Wan Kenobi with her life and her future. This fact is even made apparent in The New Hope when Princess Leia sends the R2D2 to Tatooine with a message for the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. She took this risk because Obi-Wan had always been her savior and he was the only one who could challenge the empire.

The Explanation

So it seems that the second episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi explains pretty well why Kylo Ren was originally named Ben Solo in the Star Wars universe. What we still don’t understand is why did Disney choose to make him evil other than for the purposes of shock value. Well, I guess they did shoot themselves in the foot with that one. We are still very excited to see what the next few episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi will bring to the table.

Maybe we will get more about the young Skywalker children or there might be an appearance by Darth Vader himself. Whatever the case might be, we cannot wait for the next episode to release.
