Phase 4 Still Has to Explain This Captain America Plot Hole From Endgame

There is a Captain America plot hole from Endgame that still needs to be plugged. We have been waiting all throughout Phase 4 for some relevant details that would change how we think about this plot hole. But nothing has surfaced. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has doled out a flurry of content after Endgame. Fans expected them to slow down but the hiatus of 2020 has forced Marvel to fast-track a lot of its content. 2021 saw the release of numerous OTT shows and movies. All of them attempted to advance the plot of the MCU after the death of Tony Stark and the conclusion of the Infinity Saga.

The most interesting thing that happened at the inception of Phase 4 was the introduction of the concept of the Multiverse. You see, Loki introduced us to the idea of the multiverse and how our choices can lead to something known as nexus events. When these events take place they create branching timelines and the TVA had to step in to prune these timelines. The Time Variance Authority ended trillions upon trillions of lives over and over again in an attempt to keep the sacred timeline contained. But they had to pay the price at the end of the day when Sylvie decided to kill He Who Remains and set the multiverse free. This created a lot of excitement in the fandom and it also created a lot of new questions. But the question we have today may not be solved with the multiverse.

Captain America Plot Hole In Endgame

You see, during the fateful battle of Endgame, Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man battled with Thanos alone for a while before the other Avengers showed up. This battle sequence was riddled with some of the most amazing scenes we have seen in a long time. We saw Captain America lift the legendary Mjolnir and we also saw Thanos breaking Steve’s iconic shield in half. This fight sequence is truly nerve-wracking but there was something absurd about it that we are yet to understand.

You see, the shield is cut in half in this scene but when Captain America returns as an old man at the end of the movie he has a shield that is completely unbroken. This creates a continuity problem in the MCU. If this old Steve Rogers is the same person we know as Captain America in modern times then how is he in the possession of an intact vibranium shield. The original Captain America must know that the original shield shattered in the battle with Thanos and there is no way that he would be able to reforge the said shield without help from S.H.I.E.L.D. or Wakanda.

Both of whom, he cannot contact, because this Steve from the past has to be careful not to create a nexus event and not to split the timeline. It is one of those things that Marvel just glosses over during the epilogue of Endgame. We get some form of fakeout with him looking at Peggy during his first trip in time and then we get the final payoff when old Steve shows up.

The Problem

Captain America plot hole from Endgame

It is a powerful narrative and it inspires a lot of awe from the audience but the plot holes discount the validity of the moment and that is what we are concerned about. It was fan expectation that these plot holes may be resolved in Phase 4. Maybe with a throwaway line in Falcon And The Winter Soldier. But we are yet to receive any content in that regard. This is concerning, to say the least. It implies that Marvel does not care about creating or fixing plot holes in their timeline. At least, not immediately.

We feel that they should once again put their ears to the ground and start listening to their fans instead of taking complete creative freedom with the material.
