Doctor Strange 2 Box Office Will Not Cross $1 Billion Now

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been growing at an unprecedented pace. It has seen an influx of characters and universes. We think that the inclusion of abundant elements has caught up to Marvel. Doctor Strange 2 box office is evidence of this. Multiverse of Madness opened to a great weekend upon its release. The movie had a lot of hype behind it and the audiences rode this hype train all the way to its destination. We wanted to see the multiverse falling apart, reality bursting at the seams. But what we got was a sad impression of what the story could have been.

Multiverse of Madness starts where WandaVision left off. Some people have called it a Scarlet Witch movie with a Doctor Strange name. We don’t disagree with them. The movie is more about Wanda’s growth than anything. Yes, we visit a lot of universes (fan bait) and we see a lot of characters (fan bait x2) but none of them amount to anything more than taking Wanda’s story forward. Strange learns very little throughout the movie. In fact, he only learned how to bow to Wong, traditionally speaking. The movie’s plot holes were as glaring as the misdirection in marketing. Sam Raimi gave us a wonderful horror flick but this was an MCU movie, and there are certain considerations that should have been made.

Multiverse of Madness made $187 million on its opening weekend in the domestic market. However, in the second weekend, the movie’s domestic collection saw a 67% drop to $61 million. This is just a tad better than expected. Due to the bad reception that the movie was expected to see a 68% drop. This is not that off the mark, but they are still doing better. This is all thanks to the MCU. The Marvel franchise has had its share of successes and this is not one of them, and that is ok.

We think that this is not that unprecedented in the MCU, considering the fact that No Way Home had the same kind of drop in its second weekend’s domestic collection. No Way Home fell by 67.5%. Similarly, Black Widow fell by 67.8% during its second-weekend collection at the domestic box office. But that is not the most accurate comparison since Black Widow also loss of revenue because of an OTT release. An issue led to a rather absurd conflict between Black Widow herself and Disney. The decline in the ticket sales of Doctor Strange 2 is not even exclusive to the MCU.

Take the DECU for example. Batman V Superman suffered from a similar issue. When a movie focuses too much on character growth and not enough on the spectacle, they end up missing the point. People go to theatres to have an experience, not to experience a story. The difference is subtle but it is there. We can see it in ticket sales in the domestic market. It doesn’t matter that the fans love the movies. These cinematic universes now have a bigger audience than any comic fanbase.

The Future

To cater to this fanbase, they must adapt to the times. Post-pandemic cinema cannot be about the same things we now get on OTT services. It has to evolve beyond just being a good story. The movies have to now keep pace with a growing and changing market. This is because of the evolution of CGI to a point that you can no longer understand what is real and what is a dream (Re: Moon Knight). Multiverse of Madness is not a bad movie in any regard. However, it fails to do anything new, and that is its fatal flaw.

We think that if Marvel wants to hold the market now they must use their vision to advance their world-building and develop their heroes into powerful entities. Love and Thunder have a lot to prove when it comes to the MCU. Will it be able to pull us through Phase 4?
