The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become the largest comic book cinematic universe in the world. There are two reasons for this. The first is the introduction of a number of new factions like the mystic realm in Shang-Chi and the advent of the Celestials in the MCU. Along with these factions, there is also the fact that the multiverse has been freed, and now things are about to reach a fever pitch. All of this has maxed out the hype of the MCU over the last couple of years. The multiverse also makes us think that Jake Gyllenhaal should return to the MCU. Stop! You say. “Don’t suggest that!” someone adds. “That’s the dumbest idea I have ever heard” a dissenting voice echoes.
Well, I know the sentiments of the fans on this issue but there is something more to the idea than meets the eye. Give me a chance to explain and I assure you that you will not be able to resist it. Let me start from the very beginning and try explaining why fans are so against the idea of bringing back this actor. You see, Gyllenhaal played Mysterio in the MCU in Far From Home and his role was the focus of some contention. This is because Quenten Beck in the MCU is much more despicable than his comic counterpart. In fact, Mysterio’s act of revealing Spider-Man’s identity to the world and blaming Peter for his death is a piece of damming evidence of the fact. Hence, why bringing back Gyllenhaal might end up causing continuity issues in the MCU.
Jake Gyllenhaal Should Return To The MCU
But that is the thing, my dear fans. It is not Mysterio that we want. We want Gyllenhaal in the MCU but as a different character. Incidentally, Spider-Man is the character that he is most likely to play. Let me explain it a bit further. There are two reasons why we think Gyllenhaal will be perfect for the role of a Spider-Man/ Peter Parker variant in the MCU. The first is that Gyllenhaal was expected to play Spider-Man after Tobey injured his back while shooting Spider-Man 2. It was expected that Gyllenhaal would replace Maguire as the web-slinger, but this did not end up happening.
The second reason for this suggestion of ours is that the character of Mysterio has a long and varied history with Spider-Man, and we don’t just mean as a villain but as someone who likes taking up the mantle of the hero. For instance, Mysterio in Spider-Man: The Animated Series was introduced after an imposter Spider-Man showed up and robbed a bank. At this point, Mysterio tried to investigate the case and he seemingly threw Spider-Man off a bridge. This was all a ruse by Mysterio and the Spider-Man was part of his deception.
Moreover, Mysterio’s first comic appearance was as a stunt coordinator for Spider-Man where he put in real and dangerous traps rather than special effects. This meant that Spider-Man had to leave his performance and save the audience. Mysterio has always had a fun time making Spider-Man into something he’s not. Combine that with the fact that Gyllenhaal almost replaced Maguire and you have the recipe for a perfect Peter variant from an alternate timeline.
The Future
We also think that bringing back Gyllenhaal as Peter Parker would enable him to show off his acting chops in the MCU. He could act as Tom’s guide through the Multiverse and do things that Mysterio never did. It may also be very interesting to see Tom distrust this Peter because of his appearance only to realize that he can trust himself more than others. Even if this “himself” is a character from another universe.
It would be, hence, quite poetic to let Jake Gyllenhaal play the web-slinger in the MCU. Although, we think that it would be even more bombastic if Gyllenhaal plays the Captain Universe version of the character. Won’t it be nice to see him as a God?
