The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been expanding at an unprecedented rate. This is both, in regard to, the characters they have been introducing and the stories and concepts that are being subsumed into the MCU. This cinematic universe has gone from being governed by science to being governed by everything else. The fall of science in the MCU, as I like to call it, started back when Doctor Strange first came out. This story of Strange’s ascension to Sorcerer Supreme changed the MCU forever. Now, Doctor Strange 2 is liable to do something similar with the choice of a new Sorcerer Supreme.
The fans who have already seen No Way Home know that Doctor Strange is no longer the Sorcerer Supreme of the MCU. After the snap, Strange was nowhere to be found and this dimension needed a defender. So, Wong was made the Sorcerer Supreme in Strange’s absence. But this is not the formal process of ascension. Think back to how Strange got the title in the first place. The Ancient One, on the verge of their death, imparted the knowledge of the timestream to Strange. They disclosed that Strange was always meant to be the next Sorcerer Supreme and hence the title was passed on. It was implied that they chose their successor but, in reality, the selection process is a bit more robust.
New Sorcerer Supreme
The movies don’t go into much detail about the said selection process of the next leader of Sorcerers but the comic books have a long and detailed history. In the Marvel Comicverse, Strange was given the title which he lost and regained again. In this process, we were introduced to the powers that are responsible for the transference of the title. We are talking about the Vishanti. This ancient trio of powerful Gods and Sorcerers are responsible for choosing this dimension’s defender and they bless the said defender with insight, wisdom, and power. But who are the Vishanti?
The Vishanti are Agamotto, Oshtur, and Hoggoth. Oshtur was an ancient God who ruled the earth, she belongs to the same species as Shuma-Gorath and Chthon. Considering that Marvel Studios has already introduced Shuma in What If…? and Dakhold ( chaos magic and Darkhold both originate from Chthon) in WandaVision, it is not much of a leap to assume that Oshtur might be introduced in Doctor Strange 2 with the rest of the Vishanti. Agamotto is Oshtur’s son and he was the first Sorcerer Supreme, while Hoggoth was also an ancient God. These three powerful beings rule over the choice of the Sorcerer Supreme to ensure that this dimension is well protected.
We think that they might be the final Deus Ex Machina in Multiverse of Madness. In fact, they might play a crucial role in the third act of the movie after Strange has lost all hope. Their involvement might be triggered by the fact that there was never a formal induction process for either Wong or Strange. In the comics, the Vishanti made Strange battle Doom for the title of Sorcerer Supreme, maybe we will see something similar happening in the MCU after Multiverse of Madness.
The Vishanti
To this end, it is also possible that Vishanti’s involvement may lead to Strange being powered up. These three Gods are known to bless the Sorcerer Supreme of this dimension with wisdom, insight, and power. These are things that Strange is still missing, not in great capacity, but in little quantities. If he has Gods backing him up and aiding him then the MCU’s version of the Sorcerer might become like the all-powerful Doctor Strange from the comics. The Marvel comicverse is peculiar in this regard because there is nothing like a CGI budget in the comics.
The only limitation they have for a story arc is their imagination and the artist’s prowess. However, when it comes to movies we have to work within the given constraints of what is possible. The most interesting bit is that Multiverse of Madness is a big-budget movie and the involvement of Gods in this project might just be possible.
