The Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded exponentially over the past year. Part of the reason for this is the new multiversal aspect that has now become a staple for the franchise. Every new project that Marvel initiates now has the mentions of parallel universes and characters from long-forgotten franchises. It seems that Marvel Studios is trying to subsume all the older heroes in a way in which they can appease fans of all demographics. Multiverse of Madness will be a big step in this direction. With Sam Raimi at the helm, a number of new characters will be making their appearance in the movie. One of these characters, America Chavez will insult Doctor Strange during the movie if the latest chatter is to be believed. Take a look below to see what we mean.
During an interview with Fandango Sam Raimi was asked about the importance of Chavez’s character in the plot of Multiverse of Madness. The interviewer wanted to know what the character brought to the table other than her multiversal powers. To this, Sam Raimi had this to say, “Well, she adds an exciting spirit of youth. She’s a newcomer to her powers and to our world. She actually comes from another universe. I think she brings a sense of lightness and youth. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange can be a very egotistical and stuffy character, a know-it-all. She just flies in the face of that. She doesn’t really have respect for him originally. She sees right through the fronts that he puts up. She’s much more down-to-earth and one of us, and she doesn’t take his attitude. I don’t think he likes that at first. So, she creates a contrast.”
America Chavez Will Insult Doctor Strange
If we take Raimi’s words at face value then we can determine that Chavez and Strange will not have the healthiest of relationships from the get-go. It seems that Chavez is going to be portrayed as a grounded character who deals more in practicality than in boasts and this attitude will not go down well with Strange. Doctor Strange is a cocky narcissist. He may have saved the universe a couple of times but he is yet to learn about the consequences of his own actions. The only reason why he has been such an important part of everything is that he was the keeper of the time stone.
He was also the only person who knew how to use it effectively. So when Thanos came to town it was only Strange who could strategize a plan for the Avengers’ victory. But now that the stone has been destroyed for good there is nothing that Strange can employ as a get out of jail free card. With the arrival of The Illuminati and Scarlet Witch Wanda, there is very little that he can do but run away. It will be interesting to see how he will deal with the said situation with America Chavez in tow.
Strange has been selfish for a long while so letting him take care of Chavez will surely help the character grow. Raimi details some friction between the two but we presume that these trivial conflicts will resolve themselves by the end of the movie. It is also possible that Strange and Chavez will form a deep bond by the time they end their quest. We don’t know what The Illuminati wants and why Chavez is running away from everything.
The Possibilities
The new footage from Multiverse of Madness reveals some interesting plot points and makes us think that everyone is running away from the Zombies. But if that is the case then why is The Illuminati persecuting Strange instead of asking for his help. There is a possibility that Doctor Strange is the perpetrator of a sinister plot but he does not know it yet. Maybe The Illuminati captured Strange at a moment in time before he becomes evil. Or maybe their actions are what inspire Strange and Wanda to take a sinister path to save their universe.
All of this is speculation and we don’t actually know what will happen in the movie. But it still feels nice to get some new footage and clues this close to the release date.
