The Plans for the Unmade Nick Fury Movie Explained
Solo projects have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite a long time. Over the years almost all the characters have been attempted to be given a solo project in order to give them a chance to be explored. There have been various candidates for solo projects over the years and while some came true, others had to be dealt with in other manners. Recently, we got to see Black Widow in her first solo project for Phase 4 of MCU. This project was planned for a long time and it finally went through and we got to witness it. But there is an unmade Nick Fury movie as well, and here are all the plans the studio had for the canceled project.
Solo Movies In MCU
There are a lot of characters that deserve a solo project in the MCU franchise. Around the beginning of the franchise, we only had solo projects for three of the five Avengers that appeared in 2012’s The Avengers. While we didn’t get to see Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk in a solo project, the character did appear in continuity to The Incredible Hulk. But there were actually plans for Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk to appear in some solo projects, most probably a trilogy of movies. These were later built into the narrative of the MCU projects and we got to see some interesting character development in the Avengers movies.
Nick Fury
The character of Nick Fury has been present in the franchise ever since the beginning of the franchise. This character has been an essential part of Marvel ever since his conception in 1963. Over the years we have gotten to see various iterations of the character along with a long publication history. But he has been mostly depicted associated with SHIELD as the director or leading some other team in Marvel. The character would make his MCU debut with Iron Man in the post-credits scene. Later he would end up playing an essential role in bringing together the set of heroes for the Avengers Initiative.
Samuel L. Jackson was picked for the role based on a reference to the actor in the Ultimates for the role of Nick Fury. Jackson would bring his performance to the screen and would instantly become one of the most awesome characters in the project. His character would become an essential part of MCU by bringing together certain elements of the franchise that are required for the narrative. Even though he mostly appeared in small roles in the MCU projects, he would get the most screen time in the Captain Marvel solo movie. But it seems that the character almost had a solo movie for the MCU.
Unmade Nick Fury Movie
Earlier in the MCU, Marvel had actually given thought to making a solo project for Nick Fury. This was because Hollywood realized the potential of this genre and the awesome concept of exploring a larger continuity. Marvel announced that they would work on a number of pre-MCU Marvel movies that would include a Nick Fury solo movie. Andrew W. Marlow was hired to write the script of the project in 2006 but eventually, the movie would go unmade. Fury would end up appearing in the MCU just two years later. The script was actually going to take from the arc of the character in Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD.
No other information regarding this script was released and thus fans were confused if the script was actually completed. It is not surprising to see that this idea was eventually dropped considering we did get to see the character appear as a significant part of the MCU. Following his appearance in the franchise, we actually got to witness the probability of the Avengers project coming true. Not only that but the character would also get a chance to show his worth next to the heroes in some of the other projects in the franchise.
While there is a lesser chance for a solo movie for the character, we can expect to see him appear as the protagonist in the Disney+ Secret Wars series.
