Nicolas Cage May Not Play Ghost Rider in the MCU After All

Nicolas Cage is very well known for his fandom of comics and has been quite open about this fascination. The actor even ended up playing a Marvel character with his Ghost Rider movies featuring him as Johnny Blaze. With the expansion of the MCU, fans have been wondering if we will get to see more projects from the past being made canon to the franchise. With the hints that we might end up seeing the Fox X-Men movies being made canon to the franchise, it isn’t too far-fetched to expect the same from Ghost Rider. Nicolas Cage isn’t sure about his Ghost Rider being made canon to the MCU with the multiverse. We may get a different Ghost Rider in the MCU after all.

Nicolas Cage & Ghost Rider

The actor gave us two of the wildest Marvel movies with the solo ventures for Ghost Rider in 2007 and 2011. This was right around the time that the MCU had just started and fans got to see some other solo ventures from the popular Marvel characters. Even though both the Ghost Rider movies didn’t really earn much appreciation from the critics, there is a certain amount of fan following for the movies. Even though Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. managed to have its own rendition of the character, it wasn’t nearly as popular as Nicolas Cage’s take on the role. This has now allowed fans to theorize that we might get to see the character appear in the MCU.

Spider-Man: No Way Home took things to a whole new level with the movie featuring two of the past Spider-Man actors reprising their roles in the movie. Not only that, but the movie also saw the Spider-Man villains also making a return with the actors reprising their roles. After this, fans started wondering about other characters and non-MCU movies that could be made canon to the franchise. There are theories that we will get to see certain projects being made canon to the franchise with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Cage’s Ghost Rider stands as an interesting candidate considering MCU might end up improving on the character.

Nicolas Cage Comments On Ghost Rider in the MCU

In an interview with Brandon Davis from ComicBook, Nicolas Cage talked about the chances of reprising his character of Ghost Rider in the MCU. When asked if he’d talked with Kevin Feige about a chance to reprise his role in the MCU, the actor stated:

Not yet, no. That hasn’t happened…

Earlier in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor had talked about entering the rumored field for reprising his role as Ghost Rider in the MCU. The actor hadn’t given a clear answer but he did share his view about these rumors and the franchise. He stated:

These are hot topics, and I get it, because these are the types of things that become like wildfire on the internet. I’ve always admired the realm of the comic book and I’ve always thought stories were really colorful and entertaining and, frankly, kind of wholesome in a really positive way. I don’t know what the umbrage is with people that want to knock them. I certainly think there’s great value in that they’re bringing happiness to people.

Ghost Rider in the MCU

When asked about these comments, the actor clarified that he wasn’t talking about Ghost Rider specifically. According to him:

But what’s interesting is nobody asked me about going back to Ghost Rider. That was a question that came up and they weren’t asking about Ghost Rider, they were asking, ‘What do you think of the Marvel movies?’ And I gave my opinion about it.

Finally, the actor was asked to comment about returning to Ghost Rider, to which the Oscar-winning actor replied:

Ghost Rider is an amazing character. I mean, he’s a complicated character. It’s kind of like, how do you tell the story of Faust within the context of that universe? Because, it’s a very philosophical character. I think it makes him special from other superheroes.

Cage Shows Interest In A DC Villain

While the actor might not be sure about reprising his role in MCU, he had shown interest in another character, a DC villain. With indication to Matt Reeves’ The Batman, the actor stated that he would love to play Egghead in the franchise. He said,

We have this new [movie with] Robert Pattinson as The Batman, which I’m excited to see. I haven’t seen it yet but I think he would be terrific. The villain that Vincent Price played on the 60s show, Egghead, I think I want to have a go at Egghead. I think I can make him absolutely terrifying. And I have a concept for Egghead. So let them know over at Warner Bros., I’m down for Egghead.

It is not clear if we will see him appear in the superhero movies, but it would surely be exciting to see the actor appear in one. Recently, the actor has ended up appearing in some critically acclaimed movies and this could be the very thing that might pave the way for him to appear in a franchise. His appearance in the MCU is something that we might have to wait for considering there is a chance he has an NDA with Marvel Studios. According to rumors, Marvel wants the actor to reprise his role as Ghost Rider. If he wants it, then we can be sure that it might actually end up happening.
