The news was first reported by Deadline and William Hurt’s son posted regarding his father’s death. The actor had prostate cancer that had spread to the bone according to an announcement made in May 2018. According to his son’s post:

It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday. He died peacefully, among family, of natural causes. The family requests privacy at this time.

He had a rather interesting start in the industry with some very interesting and critically acclaimed roles. Hurt became a major star in the 80s, featuring in some of the most successful projects of the period. This includes titles like the comedy drama The Big Chill and the spy thriller Gorky Park. But what would really make heads turn would be his performance in the Héctor Babenco directed Kiss of the Spider Woman next to Raul Julia. This movie would end up earning him the best actor award at Cannes and even at the Oscars, which is absolutely justified. The actor would actually have three consecutive Oscar nominations attached to his name for his performances in the following years in the movie Children of a Lesser God and Broadcast News.

The actor would join the MCU in the role of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in The Incredible Hulk opposite Edward Norton’s take on the titular role. While the movie won’t be amongst the best in the franchise, Hurt would be the only actor reprising his role in future projects. Fans would get to see Ross in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame, and then in last year’s Black Widow.

Fans of the franchise were actually surprised to see the actor return for his role 8 years after appearing in one of the very initial MCU projects.
