Marvel Actor William Hurt Dies At 71
William Hurt has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic since the very early days of the franchise. We got to see him reprise his role numerous times with short appearances in every other project. The actor didn’t ever stop from bringing his brilliant acting chops to the superhero franchise with a character that had an interesting arc. Even though his appearances were short the actor always managed to have a memorable performance. Academy Award-winning actor William Hurt dies at the age of 71 due to natural causes, leaving behind some of the greatest contributions to acting.
William Hurt Dies
The news was first reported by Deadline and William Hurt’s son posted regarding his father’s death. The actor had prostate cancer that had spread to the bone according to an announcement made in May 2018. According to his son’s post:
It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday. He died peacefully, among family, of natural causes. The family requests privacy at this time.
He had a rather interesting start in the industry with some very interesting and critically acclaimed roles. Hurt became a major star in the 80s, featuring in some of the most successful projects of the period. This includes titles like the comedy drama The Big Chill and the spy thriller Gorky Park. But what would really make heads turn would be his performance in the Héctor Babenco directed Kiss of the Spider Woman next to Raul Julia. This movie would end up earning him the best actor award at Cannes and even at the Oscars, which is absolutely justified. The actor would actually have three consecutive Oscar nominations attached to his name for his performances in the following years in the movie Children of a Lesser God and Broadcast News.
Hurt In The MCU
While he was playing some interesting leading roles in the early years, later he would go for some different choices. Before joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe he would actually get a nomination for the Best Supporting Actor for David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence. The actor would join the MCU in the role of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in The Incredible Hulk opposite Edward Norton’s take on the titular role. While the movie won’t be amongst the best in the franchise, Hurt would be the only actor reprising his role in future projects. Fans would get to see Ross in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Endgame, and then in last year’s Black Widow.
Fans of the franchise were actually surprised to see the actor return for his role 8 years after appearing in one of the very initial MCU projects. This character actually got under the skins of the heroes and was one of the reasons behind the events of the Civil War. Hurt managed to bring his brilliance into the superhero franchise and fans were actually looking forward to seeing more of him. There were a lot of interesting theories making rounds regarding the actor having a role in the upcoming Disney+ series She-Hulk.
There was a lot more of him that we wanted to see and it would have been interesting to see what else he had to deliver. With the expansion of the franchise into the tv series format we might have gotten to see a lot more of him. It is not yet known if we will actually get to see him making one final appearance with She-Hulk. There are a lot of rumors regarding the fact that the actor would finally be seen playing Red Hulk in the series. We will only find out when the series comes out later this year. We send our condolences to William Hurt’s family in this difficult period.
