Doctor Strange Director Confirms An Easter Egg Which Nobody Spotted

Doctor Strange again was a movie that proved how unique and creative Marvel movies are as it was a total visual spectacle. It was the origin story of the Earth’s Supreme Sorcerer. The movie came out in 2016, and we also got to see a little bit of Doctor Strange in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. Next, he will appear in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 before the sequel to his solo movie is announced.

Now, in celebration of the holiday which is celebrated on Feb 2, as Groundhog Day, a Doctor Strange fan took t twitter to point out an Easter Egg which no one had noticed until now. Groundhog day is the one where a groundhog emerges from its burrow to determine how many more weeks of winter must be endured.

This fan pointed out that the car crash that caused Stephen Strange to injure his hands took place on February 2. Scott Derrickson who was the director of the movie confirmed this Easter Egg by saying that he has waited for almost two years to see someone spot this particular reference.

Well, the specific day may be arbitrary, but this was surely a reference to the film’s finale and 1933’s Bill Murray starred movie Groundhog Day. In the movie, Bill Murray played a weatherman who was headed to a small town in Pensylvania, which was famous for its Groundhog Day festivities, only for the weather to impact his departure. For some unknown reasons, the weatherman wakes up and notices that the events of the previous day are repeating themselves, sticking him in a time loop. This was then exploited by Murray’s character as he learned a variety of skills due to the endless time loop he was in and learns details about a woman in order to woo her.

This plot was kind of similar to Doctor Strange as we saw in the movie that Strange locks Dormammu into a time loop, loses his life a countless number of times and makes Dormammu his prisoner until he agrees to leave Earth alone. What an amazing reference and use of plot!

Doctor Strange was full of Easter Eggs and here are a few more of those:

Pink Floyd

In the movie, Pink Floyd’s Interstellar Overdrive was played as Strange experiences a very graphic car crash which resulted in damaging his hands giving him a permanent injury. It may seem like nothing to a movie audience, but hardcore fans know that there is a history between the two. Pink Floyd had used the artwork from Strange Tales #158 on the cover of their second album called ‘A Saucerful of Secrets’.

Benedict Cumberbatch Was Both Doctor Strange And Dormammu

The hero of the movie and the villain were both played by the same actor which was none other than Benedict Cumberbatch. Benedict provided the mo-cap for Dormammu but he wasn’t the voice actor for the character. Scott Derrickson, the director said that he only cast the actor specifically because “no one understood Dormammu better than Benedict did.”

The Quantum Realm

When The Ancient One sent Stephen Strange through the multiverse and he went through the tour of a multiverse, one of the places he was launched to was the Quantum Realm. We saw the Quantum Realm earlier in Ant-Man where Scott Lang also enters the QR and manages to come back to the real world. Janet Van Dyne who was the original Wasp went subatomic and entered the Quantum Realm in the past and was not successful in coming back.

The Doors Of Perception Gets a Shout Out

Stan Lee makes his traditional cameo but this time it was packed with a twist. Lee is seen reading a book and was highly amused by it. The book in shown here is The Doors Of Perception written by Aldous Huxley. The Doors of Perception is a philosophical account of Huxley’s experiences while using mescaline which is a naturally occurring hallucinogen with effects similar to LSD. Huxley was no doubt an inspiration for Lee while creating this amazing character in the sixties.

The Mindless Ones

Doctor Strange

In the comics, The Mindless Ones are magical beings that carry destruction wherever they go. Even Doctor Strange and Dormammu found themselves in serious trouble when The Mindless Ones get involved. In the movie, Kaecilius and his followers are transformed into Mindless Ones as they were being sucked into the Dark Dimension by Dormammu after Strange made a deal with the devil!
