Everything We Know About The Batman From Beginning To Present

The Batman is supposed to be the next big adaptation of the caped crusader and fans are absolutely excited to see how that will work out. There’s not much detail available about the movie except for the trailers that we have gotten to see so far. The movie has seen a lot of delays and this has only led to increasing the hype for the movie. Even though not much is known regarding the plot of the movie, we have been able to find out some interesting details. Let’s take a look at everything we know about The Batman right from the start to this very date.

Robert Pattinson Is The New Batman

There was a lot of confusion regarding the status of Batman when Ben Affleck retired from the character. But fans have reason to be excited considering Robert Pattinson will be taking on the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne. Just like the reception for other Batman castings, there was a mixed response from fans regarding Pattinson’s casting.

Matt Reeves Has Replaced Ben Affleck As The Director

Not only did Ben Affleck leave the role of Batman, but he also dropped out of directing the solo Batman project. There were various rumors going around this in terms of creative differences with the studio. Matt Reeves took the helm of the project and it’s an interesting move considering he helmed the much successful prequels for Planet of the Apes.

The Batman Will Not Be A Part of The DCEU

Even though there is no clarity regarding the status of Batman in the DC Extended Universe, the upcoming Batman film will not be based on this universe. It will take place in a completely different universe. Producer Dylan Clark clarified this when he said, “Warner Bros. has a multiverse where they’re exploring different ways to use the character… We don’t get involved in that.”

Riddler Is Going To Be The Prime Antagonist

Paul Dano will be seen in The Batman as the main villain in the role of Riddler. The character is named Edward Nashton which is not very far from the traditional Edward Nigma in the comics. In the very first look for the character, fans got to witness a very dark adaptation of the Batman villain.

Selina Kyle/Catwoman Will Be Played By Zoë Kravitz

There was much excitement amongst fans when they found out that The Batman will also feature Selina Kyle in the new world of Batman. The character will be played by none other than Zoë Kravitz, and she is confirmed to ride motorcycles and wield a lethal gun-and-whip combination.

Colin Farrell Will Play Penguin

The final addition to the baddies for The Batman was announced to be Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin. Colin Farrell will take on the role that has not been seen since back when Danny DeVito took on the role. The actor is absolutely unrecognizable in the character and it goes to show that it will be an interesting antagonist to the caped crusader.

Jeffrey Wright Will Be Playing Jim Gordon

Batman won’t amount to anything without two other people, and one of them is none other than GCPD Lieutenant Gordon. Previously this character was taken on by Gary Oldman and J.K. Simmons even though the latter didn’t get much of a chance to play it out. This time around Jeffrey Wright will take on the role and we will also get to see a version of the Bat-signal.

Alfred Pennyworth Will Now Be Played by Andy Serkis

Everything We Know About The Batman

Bruce Wayne cannot survive in the real world without the parent-like trustworthy figure of Alfred Pennyworth. This time around the character will be taken on by none other than, longtime Matt Reeves collaborator, Andy Serkis. The actor’s first look for the movie clearly indicated that we will get to see some rather interesting rendition of Alfred as he might also get involved in the action.

Confirmed Supporting Cast For The Film

Other than the main cast a lot of other actors will be seen playing some significant characters in the movie. These include John Turturro as Gotham City gangster Carmine Falcone, Barry Keoghan in a minor role as a comic cop Stanley Merkel, who is also being rumored to be the Jokes, and Peter Sarsgaard will appear as Gil Colson who is Gotham’s DA. We also got to see Jayme Lawson’s Bella Reál in the trailer who might be an upcoming politician.

Batman’s Costume

Early last year, Matt Reeves gave us a first look at the costume for Robert Pattinson’s Batman. The costume has now been shown during various trailers and other promotional material for the movie. It appears to be a lot more basic than the rather serious versions we have been used to from the previous renditions of the character.

The Batmobile in The Batman

Some of the official photos for the movie actually gave us our first look at the Batmobile for the movie. Even this appears to be less advanced in comparison to the version we have seen before as it is essentially a souped-up muscle car that has a turbo rocket in the rear and some of the other basic Batman features. This might be because of the relative freshness of the character itself.

First Trailer For The Movie

Fans got to see the first trailer for the movie in late August of 2020 and it was everything that was needed to increase the hype for the movie. The theories regarding Batman being a bit softer were put to rest when the hero punches someone to a pulp in the trailer. It also introduced us to the very sinister look at Riddler and gave us an idea that it will not be just any other adaptation.

The Story Will Take Place In Batman’s Year Two

It was fairly obvious ever since the casting that the character won’t be the experienced version of Batman that we have gotten used to. Details regarding the project revealed that it is heavily inspired by DC’s Batman: Year Two comic books. This actually gives us hope that we will get to see a lot more of this rendition of Batman in some future projects as he gains more experience.

Filming Locations

Most of the shooting for the film took place in the U.K. and that allowed a chance for incorporating some major landmarks. Based on the trailer footage, Gotham’s City Hall will be Liverpool’s St. George’s Hall and the courthouse we got to see will be the County Sessions House. But the movie was also shot in Gotham’s true roots back in Chicago because Matt Reeves wanted to harness the authentic tone for the movie.

The Soundtrack Will Be Composed By Michael Giacchino

Nolan’s Batman trilogy had one of the most amazing composers attached to it with Hans Zimmer taking the duties. But The Batman won’t be holding back as composer Michael Giacchino has been hired to do the task. The score was actually completed in October 2021 and fans got to hear some of it in the trailers for the movie and it is surely a feast.

The Batman Spinoff Series Gotham PD

The Batman will be a completely different universe for the character and this will be further expanded upon with some other projects. In July 2020, it was announced that we will get to see a GCPD based spinoff series that will act as a prequel to the movie. It will see Jeffrey Wright’s Gordon in one of the lead roles and hardly much has been released regarding the project. Arkham Asylum will play a significant role in the plot of the series.

Filming Stopped When Pattinson Tested Positive

The pandemic affected the production for the movie and this was very clear when The Batman’s production had to a standstill with just 2 months of shooting done. Later the production saw another pause when Robert Pattinson tested positive but the filming managed to continue a month later under heavy restrictions.

The Details In The Batman Images

A lot of interesting details for the movie were released over the course of 2020 and 2021 and this included a variety of images. Most of these details were actually missing in the trailer and they gather much intrigue from the fans. These photos actually revealed some idea regarding the tone of the movie and the structure that Matt Reeves is actually going for here.

Reshoots Involve Pattinson & Farell

There was an announcement that Robert Pattinson and Colin Farrell had to go back to Glasgow for shooting some extra material for the movie. Generally, it is considered to be an ill omen for a movie but recently this has been the case for various other projects. Even though there is not much idea regarding how much these reshoots will affect the movie, fans are speculating this might mean some added details to the project.

Penguin Gets His Own Spinoff Series

One of the most exciting things about the project has to be Penguin’s appearance in the movie. The character looks a lot different from his past portrayal and even the actor is unrecognizable in the role. Fans will actually get to see a lot more of this character as a spinoff series has been announced based on the character. Lauren LeFranc will be penning the script for the series and this might explain why Farrell claimed his role is minor in the movie.

Second Trailer For The Batman

The second trailer for The Batman was released on October 2021 and it took us deeper into the world of the movie. This time around the hype for the movie increased even further as we got to see a much clearer look at Paul Dano’s character. It even had some moments shared between Catwoman and Batman and that confirmed that both of them will be teaming up for some of the action in the movie.

The Batman‘s Official Synopsis

The first synopsis for the movie was released in November 2021, and that said:

THE BATMAN is an edgy, action-packed thriller that depicts Batman in his early years, struggling to balance rage with righteousness as he investigates a disturbing mystery that has terrorized Gotham. Robert Pattinson delivers a raw, intense portrayal of Batman as a disillusioned, desperate vigilante awakened by the realization that the anger consuming him makes him no better than the ruthless serial killer he’s hunting.

Meanwhile, the second synopsis was:

Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies—Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright)—amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

Third Trailer For The Batman Features Viral Riddle

We got to see another trailer for the movie in December and this time there was a certain tone to the trailer. It was titled “The Bat & The Cat” and it included a lot of scenes surrounding the characters of Catwoman and Batman. There is also some hint at Bruce Wayne’s legacy being a part of the narrative as Alfred is revealed to have hidden something from Bruce.

Two Different Cuts For The Movie

Everything We Know About The Batman

Recently, there was much buzz surrounding The Batman as Warner Bros. was in the process of choosing between two different cuts of the movie. Generally, this is done in order to choose a specific tone for the movie because it might affect the audience’s reception. There were also rumors that one of these cuts actually featured Barry Keoghan as Joker.

New Poster Focusing on Batman & Catwoman

The recent poster for the promotion of The Batman saw the spotlight being put on the characters of Batman and Catwoman. We saw a certain pattern to it as the Bat occupies the red side of the poster whereas the Cat is seen on the blue half. But the most exciting thing about the poster has to be the fact that it features Catwoman wielding her iconic whip.

The Batman‘s Release Date

The Batman will be released in theaters worldwide on March 4, 2022, unless any further delays affect the movie on the basis of the increased number of COVID-19 cases.

HBO Max Release Date

Most of the Warner Bros. movies saw a simultaneous release in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming platform. But this will not be the case for The Batman as viewers can expect to see the movie about a month after its theater release. The movie will be released on the streaming platform on April 19.
