Eternals Director Reveals The Backstory of Eros, the Brother of Thanos

This year will be marked as one of the biggest for Marvel as it saw the biggest variety of projects come from them. The most exciting project was definitely Eternals even though it received mixed reviews. There is a lot that this movie unfolded and actually indicated considering what might be on hold for the franchise itself. But one of the biggest surprises was definitely at the end of the movie with the post-credits sequences. While the mid-credits scene actually hinted at the new character joining the franchise, but the end-credits scene actually set up more for the Eternals themselves. With the addition of Harry Styles as Eros into the MCU, there was much confusion regarding the history of the character. Eternals director Chloé Zhao has given some context towards the backstory of Eros in the MCU.

Eternals End-Credits Scene

Fans had already found out reports of Harry Styles being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe before we got to see Eternals. There was a lot of hype about the movie considering it was going to give us some idea regarding the mythology of the entire franchise. The movie did provide some clearance towards the background of the franchise but there was also reference to what we will see in the franchise going ahead. This includes the fact that the post-credits scene for the movie showed what else might be in store for the Eternals next in the MCU.

The end-credits scene had Harry Styles as Eros along with his trusty companion Pip the Troll appear in the ship of the Eternals. They mentioned that they too were Eternals and intend to help our heroes in finding more such Eternals and also mentioned that the Eternals back on Earth are now in danger. While this did surprise the audiences but it also left us with a lot of questions regarding the franchise. These questions were mainly surrounding what will be the story behind the character of Eros who has some history in the MCU already. Eros is actually the brother of Thanos and bringing him in leads to a lot of plotholes in the narrative of the MCU so far.

The Backstory of Eros in Eternals

In an interview with Empire, Eternals director Chloé Zhao talked about how she has envisioned the newly introduced character of Eros played by Harry Styles. According to her:

For me, the backstory of Eros is that he deserted, he said, ‘I’m not doing this anymore.’ So he somehow got that sphere, which you saw in his hand, and he ran off and made Pip the troll. They’re like Han Solo and Chewie. Arishem’ s been looking for him, and he’s just been a space outlaw. That’s the character I had in my mind. But I never said once to Kevin, ‘Here’s the character. Let’s find an actor.’ For me, it was a package deal. It’s got to be Harry. That’s how I pitched it to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige].”

On being asked about why she intended to bring Eros in the MCU, she replied:

I can tell you why! Long story short, with that depressing ending, at some point he was going to be one of the Eternals on that ship. And that didn’t quite work out. But I had been wanting to bring Eros into the MCU. So I kept mentioning it to Kevin [Feige] at every chance I had in the hallway, because I love the idea of Eros being another Eternal, another Ajak. He’s an Eternal, and he was stationed on Titan – 10 of them were, just like the 10 Eternals on Earth, assuming Titan is also a host planet at some point. Now, if you think about that, what influence could Eros have had on the inhabitants of Titan, the way Ajak has influenced people on Earth? And how that has affected Thanos?

Backstory of Eros

The biggest reveal from the director has to be the fact that Eros has created life-forms himself with Pip the Troll being a creation of his own. This might change many aspects of the character and how we were drawing parallels for him from the comics. But that was completely expected considering Pip has a history of his own. The comics never indicated a connection with Eros, so it is clear the MCU is heading in a different way from the comics. A future project working on these characters might properly look at these arcs and give us a better idea regarding how they work in the MCU.

Eternals will be available on the Disney+ streaming platform on January 12, 2022.
