How The Emergence In Eternals Probably Got Referenced In Endgame

Eternals is one of the most interesting additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it works on both the future and past of the franchise. The narrative of the movie followed characters who had been a part of the MCU for a long time while at the same time it had to focus on how the characters would work into the franchise. One of the major things about MCU is that each movie is connected to the other with references and certain plot points that aren’t even referred to directly. While Eternals provided its own exposition regarding the characters there seems to be have been a reference to the events in a past movie. According to a fan theory, the Emergence in Eternals might have actually been referenced in Avengers: Endgame.

The Emergence

Eternals talks about the true origins of the Eternals and the Deviants and what role the Celestials had to play in the universe. Here we are told that the Eternals were actually synthetic beings who were created in order to keep the true plans of the Celestials in order. These plans included the rise of a new Celestial in Earth that is called the Emergence. This Emergence would actually lead to the destruction of life on the planet and at the same time, the Eternals would be sent to a whole new plant to follow the same set of instructions.

It is clear that the Emergence will start showing some events on Earth when it starts happening with strong earthquakes and other such events. The population saw a sudden change with the events of Avengers: Endgame and the population rise is one of the important steps to the rise of the Celestial. When the Eternals find out about this certain members of the group decide to continue the process while others work upon preventing it. It seems that Avengers: Endgame might have actually hinted at the Emergence.

Fan Theory About The Emergence in Eternals

Eternals Endgame connection (SPOILERS FOR ETERNALS) from MCUTheories

A new fan theory from a Reddit user suggested that there might have been a reference to the events of the Emergence in the Avengers: Endgame. According to the theory:

So in Endgame when Natasha is talking to war machine, captain marvel, and okoye it is mentioned that there were major earthquakes in the ocean. The Eternals movie began with a huge earthquake that was clearly a sign of the emergence. Since the celestial emerged from the ocean and the snap delayed the emergence, is it possible that the earthquakes they were referring to could be a result of the delay of the emergence?

As the Emergence is on the way the world starts showing signs of it with Earthquakes. This is shown in an early scene in Eternals where Sersi and some of her students as she is teaching go through an earthquake. While it is not actually explained how early before the Emergence of this earthquake takes place but it is rather clear that it is a part of the Emergence.

In Avengers: Endgame we see a scene where Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha is conducting a virtual meeting with other superheroes. She asks each of the characters about updates regarding events around the world and they respond with updates and activities around the world. Amongst them, Danai Gurira’s Okoye mentions that there was a massive earthquake under the ocean but she does not take it much seriously. Natasha asks what is being done about it but Okoye responds by saying it’s an earthquake and it’s a natural phenomenon.

The Emergence in Eternals

The theory connects these two events on the basis that this very earthquake might have had something to do with the events of the Emergence. In Eternals, Ajak mentions that the Emergence was delayed by the Blip and thus there’s a massive chance that the Emergence took over a massive period of time, and hence these two events are related. The earthquakes might have happened for quite a long period of time even before the actual Emergence took place.

But Ajak clearly mentions in the movie that the Emergence was actually triggered by the return of the rest of the population in Avengers: Endgame. This means that the other theory that shows that this might have been an indication the Namor might appear in the sequel to the movie might be true. There have been various hints that Atlantis will play a significant role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and maybe Okoye’s dialogue was supposed to be a reference to that only.
