The Role and Powers of All Eternals Have Been Revealed By The Producer

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded to an unprecedented level. During the release of the first Iron Man, no one could have anticipated that 13 years later the same story would be introducing a cosmic dimension. Given how the power of All Eternals works, we can’t wait to see how the MCU fits this into their “it is all science to someone” narrative. Recently Screenrant sat down with the producer of the movie, Nate Moore. Here he shared his opinions about all of the Eternals, including their powers and abilities. Moore had this to say:

“We’ve made 25 movies now at Marvel but this is the first movie that’s really built around a romance as the center of the relationship. You know obviously of Tony and Pepper, of Steven and Peggy, those tend to be kind of the side stories. This, if we can do it right, is an epic romance, so it’s never going to be The Notebook but that’s the goal is for it to be something that is the spine of the movie. What we didn’t know when we cast Richard and Gemma is they’re actually really good friends and they’ve known each other for a long time, so that chemistry was instantaneous, which is very helpful when you’re trying to cast a romance like this.”

Ikaris

Ikaris has always been the de facto leader of the Eternals because of his sheer power. If Eternals are compared to the justice league then Ikaris has to be considered to be equivalent to superman. He has the power to rival the strongest warriors in the universe and the lasers in his eyes are reminiscent of the man of steel in more than one way. Richard Madden plays Ikaris in the movie and his powers include the cosmic eye lasers and the power of flight.

Moore said:

“If Ikaris is as written in the books kind of boring, you’re not going to invest in that romance… and you’re probably not going to invest in the movie so much.”

He also praised the performance of Richard Madden in this role. It’s nice to see Robb Stark entering into the MCU, as a substitute for Superman, no less.

Sersi

Sersi is more well known to comic fans for the simple reason that this Eternal became an Avenger in later issues. This could be foreshadowing for what is yet to come in the future of The Eternals in the MCU. Sersi is an Eternal who can transmute matter at her will. This makes her a formidable opponent. She is also in a relationship with Ikarus but Dane is also interested in Sersi!?

Moore said:

“Sersi and Dane have a relationship that is both sweet and sort of complicated in an interesting way. It was an interesting way to build what we think could be a cool not a love triangle because that makes it sounds fraught and crazy but to actually to give Ikaris a run for his money… that sounds terrible.”

Powers of all Eternals

Sersi and Ikarus have always been the center of the attention of the trailer shots and it seems that it will be the same in the movie. Although, this is a departure from the comics. Sprite and Sersi have been living in London without a Deviant incident in the past 5000 years so it is a bit Strange when a Deviant pops up and attacks the pair.

He said:

“Here’s just a quick couple of storyboards or a Deviant chucks a bus at her. And instead of dodging, she turns it into a spray of flower petals. So that fun play with powers is something I think that gets us really excited about these new characters.”

Thena

Angelina Jolie plays a warrior Goddess in the Eternals. She is Thena, the most proficient of the warriors of Eternals. Thena is called “best warrior in the galaxy” by Moor who goes on to praise her powers, “So she’s always equipped with a weapon,” Moore noted, “even if you don’t see anything visible, which is a lot of fun.” She is one of the stronger Eternals and will be imperative in the fight against the Deviants but the director revealed that she is dealing with a big handicap going into this battle.

“She comes down with something called Mahd Wy’ry,” Moore explained. “If you guys are fans of comics Mahd Wy’ry is something that can beset an Eternal. It’s a version of dementia. Because of the amount of memories they have, they become unstuck in their own mind, so she starts to forget exactly when she is, so through the course of the movie, Gilgamesh becomes her protector. And when we find them in the modern-day, they’re living off the grid in a cabin in Australia because she’s too dangerous to have around humans, so it’s a fun arc for Angelina to play.”

Angelina Jolie brought her all to the role of Thena. She is an absolute sweetheart when it comes to doing new things. Moore revealed that the actress practiced day and night to come up with her fighting style that could blend with the choreography and do justice to the character.

Moore said:

Part of that was developing a weapons system that she could train and become fluent in, because she hadn’t done a lot of swordplays and she hadn’t done a lot of staff fighting and things like that. So we got to again develop that with her and hopefully create a style that is distinctly, as Angie would say, Thena.‘

Gilgamesh

Moore did not talk about Gilgamesh much. But comic fans know that Gilgamesh is the strongest out of all the Eternals. His raw strength is unrivaled in the cosmos and no one can hold his own against this beast. He uses his cosmic powers to bolster his own strength. Moore said, “[Gilgamesh] can use his cosmic energy to create an exoskeleton that actually amplifies his strength,” confirming that the character has been adapted straight off the pages.

The producer was rather quiet about this character which makes us suspicious and raises two possibilities. One, the character is not important in the larger story or two, he is very important to the story and talking about his powers would reveal an important plot point. I am more inclined towards the latter possibility but we’ll what happens in the movie.

Ajak

Ajak is the leader of the Eternals and she has always been the high priest of the Polar Eternals. It just means that the character of Ajak is supposed to be the one person who can talk to the Celestials and communicate their wishes to the Eternals. It is a complicated relationship but this makes her the leader of the pack in the comics. She has numerous feats to her name but she is listed as one of the tacticians of the team. We do hope that we see her battle prowess in the movie.

Moore iterated the role of the character by calling her “the matriarch of the Eternals.” According to Moore, she’s a healer and spiritual advisor who “also has a direct line of communication to the Celestials… She is the oracle, she is the one they go to for advice and for guidance.” So this means that the character is not much different from the comics other than the gender swap. We do hope that we get to see this Eternal flex her cosmic powers in the movie.

Phastos

Phastos is the tech-savvy Eternal. He is also the one who buys the idea fall collection centre table that Ikarus smashes. But her power is that he can interface with technology and use his powers to build mean machines. It is sure to make the Eternals more powerful if they can be bolstered by technology. “He can speak to machines, he can combine different technologies to create new technologies that are unexpected, and he’s the smartest Eternal. And in some ways, Phastos becomes the mouthpiece for the good of humanity because some of this technology has helped humanity to advance and so he’s very invested in humankind doing well.

Makkari

Makkari is described by the producer as the fastest woman in the universe. This is consistent with her comic power and so is her costume but this character is also gender-swapped. The character will be deaf and talk to the other members of the team via sign language.“the fastest woman in the universe who is so fast, in fact, that she breaks the sound barrier every time she uses her power, which actually doesn’t affect her because she also happens to be deaf.”

Although Makkari may be deaf but the director found a way to make her empowered in her own way“Because she is constantly vibrating, she’s constantly moving, she herself can sense vibrations,” Moore observed. “So she can actually hear by feeling in the same way that the deaf community hears music by feeling the vibrations.” This reminds us of Beethoven. The character is empowered to a degree that we would appreciate more in live-action. We can’t wait to compare her to the Flash. She also shoots projectiles.

“You see the cosmic energy particles surrounding her, you see so that bleeding edge of the sonic concussive blast that she can use in battle that make her a bit different than what you’ve seen before.”

Druig

powers of all Eternals

Fruit is a strange one. Almost like an anti-hero among the Eternals themselves. He has more strict beliefs than the rest of them and the things he can do are not matched by anyone. He has the power of mind control and a lot of compassion for humanity. Nate Moore iterates the internal conflict of the character very well,

“When they arrive on Earth, [Druig] is actually very excited about the challenge of helping humanity advance. But as humanity advances and as societies are built, he starts to see that humankind doesn’t always treat each other very well.

And he sees war, and genocide, and lack of care for the environment and becomes frustrated because if he had his druthers, he’d use his powers to control humanity and only make them do good things, but of course, that’s not their mission, so he becomes very disillusioned with humans.”

Sprite

Sprite is the Peter Pan of the bunch. She is a very old and wise character in the body of a child. The producer says, “She’s an interesting character, obviously, because she’s a 7,000-year-old woman stuck in the body of a 12-year-old,” Her powers are also oddly interesting. Something to do with altering perception, or creating holograms. The characters have been known to use this to educate in ancient times. Nate Moore also reveals a minor plot point while talking about the character:

“[Sprite] can cast illusions, so in the past when humanity didn’t have things like television, and radio, and internet, she was one of the greatest storytellers on Earth and lauded as a God. But in the present, because she looks like a 12-year-old girl, she’s not treated very well. And she and Kingo have a falling out when about 100 years ago, he left her to fend for herself to pursue stardom, so they have a very contentious relationship. It’s also a source of comedy.”

Kingo

This is the Bollywood star of the bunch. Kingo is a fun character, hats what he’s made for, comic relief. He is a Hollywood actor in modern times and he works with human beings. He likes to talk to them, to bond with them, and to shoot cosmic lasers out of his fingertips. There is even a shot in the footage we have where we see the character donning Ikarus’ outfit for a movie shoot within the Eternals.

[adinserter block=”14″]

The producer talks about the supporting character for Kingo, played by Harish Patel. Moore explained:

“Some Eternals have bonded very much with human counterparts, and he is essentially Kingo’s valet and best friend, so he gets to spend part of the adventure with Kingo.”

Eternals arrives on November 5. Which of these Eternals characters is your favorite? After knowing the role and powers of all Eternals? Let us know.
