Why Doctor Strange Still Has The Eye Of Agamotto Theory Explained

Spider-Man: No Way Home Trailer finally dropped on August 24 and was worth the wait. It lived right up to the fans’ expectations, even higher. The number of views on the trailer for the first day even exceeded that of the Avengers: Endgame. It makes sense after all these flying rumors about Maguire, Garfield, and Tom Holland uniting in a single movie. Even though we didn’t see them in the trailer, Sony and Marvel showcased the entire villains’ line instead. Interestingly, the trailer also showed that Doctor Strange still has the Eye Of Agamotto.

Marvel & Sony outdid themselves on including all the villains from Sam Raimi’s and The Amazing Spider-Man’s franchises. The inclusion of Alfred Molina as Doc Ock was teased a while ago, but fans got goosebumps when they heard the iconic line from the evil doctor, “Hello Peter.” Although, who is on the other side of this greeting is still a matter of many debates. Other characters to be reappearing are Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Benedict Cumberbatch as the infamous Dr. Stephen Strange.

The trailer opened with chaos unleashing onto Peter Parker after the public of New York got to know about the real identity of Spider-Man. And to save all his loved ones from this revelation, he sought the Master of mystic arts to make everybody forget his real identity. Even after getting warned by Master Wong, Strange casts a spell that goes wrong and opens up the gateways to the multiverse. Once the wizard broke open the multiverse, the villains from different universes crossed the gateways and wreaked havoc. But what caught the fans’ eyes is why Strange is wearing the Eye of Agamotto when there is no Time Stone inside it?

WHAT ACTUALLY IS THE EYE OF AGAMOTTO IN THE COMICS?

Doctor Strange Still Has The Eye Of Agamotto

In the comics, the Eye of Agamotto was not the home to the time stone or even any Infinity Stone. The idea of it being a beacon to the time stone is completely original to MCU. According to the comics, the Eye of Agamotto was created by the Vishanti, Agamotto. Vishantis were god-like entities in the comics with Agamotto as their leader. So the fact that Agamotto was the first Sorcerer Supreme holds in the comics as well.

So if the Eye does not possess the time stone, what does it do? The Eye of Agamotto is a powerful relic that gives its user telepathic abilities and banishes the user’s demons. It emits an all-revealing light that lets the wearer see through all illusions as well as through different dimensions. The Eye’s powers resemble somewhat that of the Time Stone as the user can see the recent past. In the comics, if a wizard needs to access the Eye, he is required to have a clean soul and a pure heart, although this rule doesn’t stand true every time.

MCU’S EYE OF AGAMOTTO

We saw the Eye of Agamotto for the very first time in 2016’s Doctor Strange and all of Dr strange’s appearances in the following movies. Wong told Strange how the relic was created by the first Sorcerer Supreme, Agamotto, father of the mystic arts. He created the device to hold and focus the powers of the time stone and has been worn by the Sorceror Supremes ever since. The Eye has never been shown as more than a home to the time stone.

During the vents of Infinity War, Thanos and the Black Order tries to take the stone from Strange. Thanos and Strange even engaged in a battle which Strange loses. Thanos snatches the Eye from his neck and shatters it to pieces. Although during the last fight of Endgame, we saw the Eye again in Strange’s neck.

So did Strange save the original Eye or what? Or was it just a mistake by the VFX editors? And what are the powers of the Eye without the stone?

Why Doctor Strange Still Has The Eye Of Agamotto?

Doctor Strange was seen wearing the necklace in multiple scenes in the trailer. So unlike what many people believe, it is more than just a fashion choice. Or MCU is finally connecting the Eye with its comic counterpart where the Eye possesses more powers than just being a homing device. The relic was created by a powerful being so it makes sense if it has some mystical aspects. Some fans even believe that it is just something to put his costume together. Hopefully, Marvel will explain its reappearance in the upcoming movie.
