Mjölnir and Stormbreaker, cast in the heart of a dying star, are some of the greatest weapons in the MCU. The MCU may have a whole roster of weapons but these two weapons always stand out due to their craftsmanship and mystical potential. They were forged ages ago when Odin tasked the dwarves of Nidavellir to craft a weapon worthy of a king. These weapons are as ancient as they are powerful. Mjölnir can absorb a huge amount of energy and emit it to create force fields, geo-blasts, and summon lightning. While Stormbreaker channels the Bifrost’s energy and can summon it on command of the wielder. Over the span of the MCU, many characters have held Mjölnir or Stormbreaker multiple times.
Mjölnir and Stormbreaker, both these weapons are too strong to be wielded by a mere mortal. Odin even put an enchantment on Mjölnir that it can only be lifted by someone who is deemed worthy of it.
Characters Who Have Held Mjölnir or Stormbreaker
1. THOR ODINSON: WIELDED BOTH MJÖLNIR AND STORMBREAKER
Thor Odinson is the worthy owner of both these weapons, so his name should be the one to start this list. It was after stripping Thor of his title as the God of Thunder that Odin enchanted Mjölnir to make his son worthy of his power (2011’s Thor). Odin’s plan worked and Thor fulfilled his destiny. He wielded his hammer all through the MCU until Hela crushed Mjölnir in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. Although shortly after, he revisited Nidavellir’s dwarves for a new weapon to defeat the Mad Titan.
Eitri forged the greatest weapon in the history of Asgard, the Stormbreaker, that was so strong that it could summon the Bifrost. Thor wielded this hammer in that last showdown with Thanos in Infinity War and all through Endgame. However, the future holds something new for him in Thor: Love and Thunder.
2. HELA ODINSDOTTIR: WIELDED MJÖLNIR IN HER DAYS OF GLORY
Hela shocked the whole world when she crushed the might Mjölnir with her bare hands in her first appearance. It was revealed later that Hela actually held the hammer for a long time before the birth of Thor. Although, for how much time is still a mystery. The murals in Odin’s courtroom revealed her and Odin going from the planet from planet to devour them where Hela is seen holding the hammer. Since she didn’t waste any time in destroying Mjölnir, we never got to see her using the hammer in live-action.
3. ODIN BORSON: TASKED EITRI TO FORGE MJÖLNIR
It is no mystery now that Odin was once a power-greedy warrior. He battled great kings, invaded planets and laid waste to hundreds of kingdoms. It was him who tasked the dwarves to forge Mjölnir. He, along with Hela, her executioner, took over nine realms and built Asgard into an Empire. But Hela’s ambitions outgrew his and he had no other option except banishing her to Hel. So, Mjölnir got passed to her brother, Thor. However, Odin never kept the hammer for himself and is only seen holding the hammer once.
4. THANOS: CAUGHT STORMBREAKER MID-AIR
Unlike Mjölnir, Stormbreaker was never enchanted, so any being strong enough to lift it could wield it. Although, that doesn’t mean that the wielder can summon lightning or Bifrost. As stated very sarcastically by Odin, the weapons are only to focus your power and not the source of the power. So Thanos could easily pick up the Stormbreaker. Thanos is even seen catching the Stormbreaker mid-air and using it against Thor. He starts to pierce his body armour when–
5. STEVE ROGERS: WIELDED BOTH MJÖLNIR AND STORMBREAKER
–Captain America calls for the Mjölnir. We all saw Captain America move the hammer (slightly) in 2015’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron and we were since waiting for him to lift it. Much to our surprise and Thor’s, Steve finally wields Mjölnir. He calls for the hammer, grabs it by its handle and saves his fellow Avenger. This scene gave chills to everyone in the audience and continues to do so after millions of rewatching. He fights the rest of the battle with the Mjölnir paired with his Shield. And being a 100-year old superhuman, he was strong enough to wield Stormbreaker and summon lightning. His scenes with these weapons are some of the most-watched clips on YouTube and Disney+.
6. KURSE: DEFLECTS MJÖLNIR MID-AIR
Kurse had a short-living appearance in the MCU in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. He is actually one of the Kursed, the Dark Elves who are altered by the Kursed Stone. In a spectacular scene from the movie, Kurse was seen deflecting the Mjölnir from its path, showcasing just how powerful he was. But what really keeps fans up at night is the fact that an unworthy being like him could divert the hammer from its path. However, with the Mjölnir now destroyed, people don’t think that an explanation should be expected. Although Thor: Love and Thunder has teased the return of Mjölnir so an explanation might be on the way.
7. VISION: LIFTED MJÖLNIR
Avengers: Age Of Ultron might not have lived up to the fans’ expectations but it gave us Vision (Paul Bettany). Paul Bettany had been a part of the MCU since its foundation in 2008 but his first physical appearance was in the Age Of Ultron. Vision was not given the best welcome but when he lifted Mjölnir, everyone saw him differently. He confirmed which side he will be fighting for and turned out to be the most useful ally. Vison was also seen complimenting just how well-balanced the hammer is, after giving Ultron an unforgettable strike.
8. TEEN GROOT: FIRST TO LIFT STORMBREAKER
Throughout Avengers: Endgame, Groot was seen playing video games and cussing his friends, just like a typical teenager. But when he saw Thor dying and Eitri couldn’t find the handle for the axe, Groot stepped up and extended his arm to make a handle. So, some might say that Groot was the first one to wield this mighty weapon. However, Eitri realized that he should find the handles before forging the weapons.
9. JANE FOSTER: WILL BE WIELDING MJÖLNIR
Thor: Love and Thunder is under production right now and is set to release on May 6 next year. The movie is rumoured to feature Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor. After the release of The Dark World and an 8-year absence from MCU, Jane Foster has a lot of catching up to do. On the other note, some t-shirts, crew and set pictures have revealed Jane wielding the weapon of God. But some fans have noticed various cracks on the hammer. Implying that the hammer will have to go through some changes before it is wielded by the new Goddess of Thunder. With Taika Waititi, Chris Hemsworth, and Tessa Thompson working on the movie, fans are super excited for this movie.
10. HONOURABLE MENTIONS
Apart from all these characters who could lift Mjölnir, many characters have tried and failed. Loki has probably tried to lift the hammer multiple times throughout his youth. Loki had always been an insecure kid and it was partly because of all the attention that Thor received as he was Odin’s firstborn (or Thor just thought he was). In a brief fight between Thor and Hulk in 2012’s Avengers, Hulk’s hand got stuck between Mjönir’s handle and the ground and he was unable to even move his hand or get up.
After some time, it just became a running joke when at the party, every Avenger tries to lift the hammer. Tony Stark, Rhodey, Bruce Banner and Steve Rogers (we all know how that turned out) failed to move the handle. Tony and Rhodey even used their armor gloves to thrust off the hammer from the table but failed remarkably. Although, Thor really seemed to enjoy seeing them mortals trying to budge the hammer. And later in the film, Pietro tried to catch it but learned a painful lesson.
