The Origins of Loki’s Magic Explain His True Intention With Asgard

The Disney+ series Loki is going in many directions and is already halfway through with its run. I, for one, am too excited to see how this turns out to be. Episode 3, “Lamentis” gave us a much-needed interaction between Sylvie and Loki. I got to understand their psyche as they were stranded on a collapsing moon with no way out. Moreover, they both shared a lot about their past. Sylvie revealed that she was aware of the fact that she’s adopted since the beginning. And Loki, in turn, explained his powers. But there was a major reveal. The Origins of Loki’s Magic explained that he always wanted to rule Asgard, and not destroy it.

The Origins of Loki’s Magic Explained

In the premiere episode, Loki learned about his future ventures. There was a scene that focused on the fate of Loki and Thor’s mother, Frigga, played by Rene Russo. His role in Frigga’s death was explored in a meaningful, emotional manner. Moreover, this version of Loki is not yet explored as an emotional character. But the first episode revealed that he is really soft within, and really attached to his mother, Frigga.

So, let’s fast forward to episode 3 of Loki. Here, Loki explained the impact of his mother’s warmth and love on him in a passive manner. Loki told Sylvie that, “She (Frigga) was the kind of person you’d want to have believe in you”. As simple as it may seem, however, has a huge impact on the character. Moreover, the episode further confirmed that Loki received his training in Asgardian magic from the Queen of Asgard. Frigga always believed in the adopted son, and this son, Loki, was always aware of it. That’s why he always wanted to rule Asgard and make her mother proud.

Origins of Loki’s Magic

Loki shared about the kindness and purity of her mother. But Sylvie doesn’t know much about the God of Mischief. He then goes on to show a little illusion that was taught by his mother. He explained that Frigga believed in him so much that she made him realize that he could do anything. Moreover, the rightful ruler of Jotunheim was told that he could make the grandest of illusions in a jiffy. He then went on to reminisce about how she would turn flowers into frogs and make fireworks happen on the water.

Frigga’s Impact On Loki’s Character

In the original timeline, Loki sort of redeemed himself. But this variant is still unaware of too many life-changing events. However, that doesn’t mean he cannot still change. The sentiment that his mother instilled in him actually stopped him from being the true iteration of evil. Moreover, he never wanted to destroy Asgard even after learning his true origins. Enraged at Odin, he still had his mother’s teaching somewhere active in the hindsight and only wanted to make her proud. Which meant ruling Asgard.

Loki, right now, has no one watching his back. This brings us back to Frigga sharing her powers with him. A deleted scene in The Dark World revealed that Frigga confessed to Thor that the God of Thunder and the All-Father Odin “cast large shadows“. Hence, these powers were shared with Loki so that he could “find some sun for himself“. The analogy behind this is actually too heavy and deep. Moreover, this tells us that Loki was never alone, and was just a victim of the circumstances.

Frigga Will Trigger Loki’s Redemption

Origins of Loki’s Magic

There is no doubt that Loki has done too many wrongs to be rectified instantly. An evil action with a pure intention is still not considered to be right. Frigga’s love for Loki was proved further when he was imprisoned on Asgard after his attempt to conquer Earth in the first Avengers film. So in my opinion, this Loki’s path to redemption will be kicked by Frigga’s love and never-dying memories.

Moreover, the Disney+ series Loki is layered even further when it comes to Loki’s emotions. I think that the further episodes will set Loki on a permanent path of redemption while his mother’s teaching stays active in his subconscious. It could also be that he will overthrow the TVA and might bring back his mother, unhinged by the consequences.

Loki stars Tom Hiddleston as the God of Mischief, Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Lexus Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, and Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane, and Eugene Cordero in undisclosed roles. The first episode is now streaming on Disney+.
