Loki has made its way to Disney+ and we’re all loving it, aren’t we? The show has already explained the concept of the Multiverse to us. It has also revealed the history of how the Time Variance Authority came into being. We also got to see the Time Keepers maintaining the ‘Sacred Timeline’. But there are some questions we have from Loki episode 1, “Glorious Purpose“. But is that it? No. We also got to see the Infinity Stones lying around worthless. Surprised much? Well, let’s talk about why the Infinity Stones stop working in the TVA?
Here’s Why The Infinity Stones Stop Working In The TVA
Loki episode 1, “Glorious Purpose, disregarded the very existence of Infinity Stones. So, everything you knew about them is rendered completely useless. At the beginning of the episode, it was shown that the Tessaract was given to a desk worker of the TVA named Casey. His desk drawer revealed multiple Infinity Stones that have been collected by the TVA over the years. He even revealed that these Infinity Stones are used as paperweights by the workers. But why is it that the Infinity Stones stop working in the TVA?
Let’s dive into the initial history of these Stones. Their origin ad history has changed throughout the course of Marvel because a large number of writers have handled their case. There have been numerous retcons and rewrites. So, in the comics of the last decade or it’s been stressed that an Infinity Gem can only work in the universe it originated from. So when someone travels outside that universe, for example, by jumping to a parallel dimension, the Infinity Gems become powerless. That is exactly the case with the TVA. The TVA exists outside the norms of Time and Space as shown in the MCU.
Why Doesn’t This Claim Collide With Endgame?
This claim was actually explained in Avengers: Endgame. And this actually goes in relation with the MCU Infinity Stones and not just Marvel Comic’s Infinity Gems. In the scene where Banner meets the Ancient One, the Ancient One introduced the concept of the Multiverse and branching timelines to the Hulk. She revealed the Infinity Stones “create what you experience as the flow of time.” In other words, the Infinity Stones are bound to the nature of reality itself in their home dimension. So if removed from their dimension, it wouldn’t be a surprise to find they lose their power.
It has been teased in the first episode that TBA exists outside the norms of time and space. As Morbius said, “time works a little differently here.” However, the show was smart in itself to let it remain a mystery. The TVA’s home remains under the sheets. And I think that it will remain this way for a while. But it certainly appears to be outside the flow of time. So what we can do is wait for the series to unfold further.
Why Was Loki Shattered After Seeing The Infinity Stones?
Loki’s entire existence for the past few years was all about these ‘paperweights’, as put by Casey, the TVA desk worker. Loki had been trying recklessly for all these years to collect these Stones to prove his loyalty to Thanos. He let the Chitaury army enter New York. And he also led a rebellion against his own brother. At this point in time, Loki is questioning every little decision he made for Thanos’s destiny. Plus, the fact that the Infinity Stones stop working in the TVA makes them untouchable.
The TVA has made it clear that they know about the variant’s past and future both. That’s because they are aware of the timeline. This is exactly when Loki discovers how his life is going to turn out to be. Even before discovering the Infinity Stones, Loki sees that it was Thanos only who kills him. And honestly, Loki was shaken beyond belief after seeing this sight.
