When we talk about Disney films, it is impossible to miss the iconic Disney princess movies that have made the banner so successful and are loved by audiences of all age groups. These movies have a strong legacy behind them. Some are inspired by folk tales, historical events and others are pure magical imagination and fairy tales.
10. Pocahontas
Pocahontas is unique among the Disney Princess movies for being the only one based on an actual historical figure rather than a classic fairy tale or an original concept. The movie itself isn’t as entertaining as the others but it must be appreciated for the fact that it introduced a new culture and was based on a real woman.
9. Snow White and the seven dwarves
The first Disney princess movie that came into existence needs to be on the list and that is ‘Snow White and the seven dwarves’. Snow White may not be the most exciting characters but she is important because the time when this movie was made there was nothing else like it. The animation is simply beautiful and the music is sweet too. Also, the evil queen is one of the best Disney villains to have existed.
8. The Little Mermaid
The only underwater Disney princess is Ariel from ‘Little Mermaid’ and this movie was a huge hit when it came out in 1989. Ariel has nice adventures in the sea and then gets a chance to explore land as well. It’s the best of both worlds but at a cost and a great soundtrack. The movie is currently being made into a live-action version and we are very excited for it.
7. The Princess and the Frog
Tiana is one of the most interesting and unique Disney princesses and she broke many Disney stereotypes. She was the first Disney princess to have a real job working towards a goal of owning her own business. She spends most part of the movie as a frog but her personality still shines through. Her chemistry with Prince Naveen is also a highlight of the movie.
6. Aladdin
Set in the town of Agrabah, Aladdin is the tale of a common man and a princess who fall in love. The movie has a lot of adventure and comedy too in the form of genie voiced by the amazingly talented late Robin Williams. Jasmine is one of the sassiest princesses and her chemistry with Aladdin is great. Although the movie focuses more on Aladdin’s adventures, it is still a worthy Disney princess movie with some great comedy and action.
5. Beauty and the Beast
This is a classic that was nominated for the best picture in the academy awards and the animation is simply delightful. Belle is one of the most popular Disney princesses of all time. The movie has great songs that are still iconic. The live-action Beauty and the Beast was also a successful film but the animated original is still our favorite. Belle is an intelligent and sensitive human and even though she isn’t initially a princess, she becomes one by the end of the movie.
4. Moana
A young girl who goes on a quest in order to solve the problems of her tribe and sails into the ocean. Moana is not a princess in the traditional sense but being the daughter of the chief makes her equivalent to a princess and that too a princess of color which was a big step for Disney. The movie was a hit with the audience and critics alike.
3. Frozen
Frozen was the film that broke all records and became one of the most loved Disney movies of all time. The music is so iconic that we are still singing ‘let it go’ even after years of the film releasing. The theme of true love and sisterhood was amazing and the fact that it is not a love story was truly refreshing. The movie had a queen and a princess at the forefront and their bond is the best part of the film (and of course Olaf!).
2. Tangled
One of the most entertaining Disney princess movies of all time was ‘Tangled’. It is quite different from the traditional princess movies and is extremely funny. The chemistry between Flynn Rider and Rapunzel is great and ‘I see the light’ is probably the best romantic duet ever. This movie led the way for the new generation of Disney princess movies and we absolutely adore it (and yes it is better than Frozen).
1. Mulan
Undoubtedly the best Disney princess movie till date is the action-filled warrior movie Mulan. Even though some would argue that Mulan wasn’t technically a princess but the fact that Disney counts her as one of the original Disney princesses, is good enough for us. Mulan appeals to many different audiences and has something for everyone including action, adventure, good music, comedy, and a great villain.
