When X-Men Join MCU, Doctor Strange Could no Longer be Sorcerer Supreme

X-Men Join MCU Doctor Strange:

The Disney-Fox merger opened up a lot of doors for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to expand. A lot of the superheroes that were Marvel property but Marvel Studios didn’t have the movie rights to like the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, are now going to be a part of the expanded Disney franchise. The X-Men, in particular, will be a valuable addition to the MCU since they are popular not just in the comic books but even amongst casual moviegoers thanks to the continuous efforts of Fox Studios in establishing a name for them via their X-Men series of movies. With the onset of the eminent debut of the X-Men in Marvel’s Superhero shared universe, things might not be as rosy as you think it would be. Marvel’s greatest magical defender might have to leave his mantle if the X-Men join the MCU.

Doctor Strange 2

Doctor Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth. He was once the proud wielder of the Time Stone aka the Eye of Agamotto. He has protected the Earthen Realm from the wrath of the Dark Lord Dormammu, a magical entity that rules the Dark Dimension and wants to invade and devastate the Earth. Doctor Strange has even helped guide Thor and Loki before and during the events of Thor: Ragnarok.  He is one of the most popular Avengers on the planet and he is good at his job. The mantle of the Sorcerer Supreme suits him and he does his best to stay worthy to create a legacy powerful enough and worthy enough for it. But it might not last for long.

There is a high possibility that Doctor Strange will have to step down from the position of Earth’s Magical Defender simply because there might be other, ‘better’ contenders for that position. And we stress the word ‘better’ because the ones we are talking about have already proved their mettle in the comics.

Who would be the person who is better at magic and sorcery than the great Doctor Strange? Do the X-Men even have such an arcane champion in the ranks? Well, we would not necessarily term these two people as X-Men per se. One might be considered more of a lone wolf who likes to do things the way she wants to. The other is more of an Avenger than an X-Man. The former is the ruler of an entire demonic dimension called Limbo. The other is one of the most powerful reality-warping mutants in Marvel Comic Book Universe’s history. I think you guys now have a fairly good idea of whom we are talking about!!

The two contenders for the position of Earth’s new Sorcerer Supreme are – the Scarlet Witch aka Wanda Maximoff and Magik aka Illyana Rasputin. We will explain why we think on these lines in detail to help you get clarified on our viewpoints.

Scarlet Witch has had a long history with dark and ancient Magic. When she was born, the Old Demon God Chthon imbued her with his essence and as a result, Wanda was able to use Chaos Magic, a powerful form of sorcery that could only be used if the caster has access to primordial dark energy like Scarlet Witch’s direct link with Chthon. In the 2016 Scarlet Witch series, it is revealed that the High Evolutionary had altered Scarlet Witch’s genetic structure at birth and she was even more receptive to magical forces, which is why her mutant powers worked so well in conjunction with sorcery. Scarlet Witch hails from a long line of witches and she is considered to be their most powerful descendant yet. She has also trained under Agatha Harkness on how to access and manipulate mystic energy. So the woman knows her way around when it comes to arcana.

If the X-Men are introduced into the MCU, there will be a high possibility that the Scarlet Witch’s origin of powers will be changed a bit. If that happens, her recent developments and advancements in the field of magic in the comic books could also be introduced into the fray of the movies. This would place her as a powerful mage instead of a superhuman whose powers were derived from exposure to the Mind Stone. Making Scarlet Witch the new Sorcerer Supreme would be beneficial for reinforcing the authority of the X-Men in the MCU which has always been the forte of the Avengers. The X-Men being the new entrants to the movie universe would immensely benefit from a mutant being placed at such an important position as the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth.

Now we are coming to our second contender. Illyana Rasputin is the younger sister of Colossus, a very famous X-Man. Colossus is considered by many to be Marvel’s Mightiest Mortal. Illyana Rasputin, on the other hand, is not a super strong brute like her brother. Instead she is a disciple of pure magic. Magik was kidnapped by the Demon King Belasco, who kept her imprisoned in Limbo. There Magik learned the intricacies of magic to become one of Marvel’s greatest sorcerers. She defeated Belasco and become the Ruler of Limbo. Time and again, she has fought alongside the X-Men as well as against them as her demonic counterpart Dark-Chylde. For now, she is currently one of the good guys.

But there have been many instances where Magik has taken over the mantle of the Sorcerer Supreme. Tempus was once time-displaced to the year 2099 where he saw Magik is the new Sorcerer Supreme. In a certain “What If” series, Magik leaves the X-Men and becomes a student of magic under the tutelage of Doctor Strange. In the sequel to that same critically acclaimed solo comic book arc, Doctor Strange uses the last of his magic to restore the mystic forces in the world and resurrect Magik (who had died before the events of the sequel arc).

Magik is then tasked with running the new school of Magic that Doctor Strange left behind. She then becomes the new Sorcerer Supreme in that reality. There is one more alternate reality that the mutant superhero team Excalibur visited that again showed Magik has become the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth after killing Doctor Strange.

Making either Magik or Scarlet Witch the new Sorcerer Supreme would be a good way to establish some mutant authority since they need to be taken seriously and not be side-lined by the already established and popular superheroes of the MCU. Scarlet Witch already exists in the MCU while Magik is making her first live-action debut with the New Mutants movie. It makes sense for Doctor Strange to have a potential successor too. We mean if Captain America (Falcon), Iron Man (Spider-Man), and Thor (Jane Foster) could have it, we see no reason Doctor Strange couldn’t!!

Spider-Man could be removed from the MCU
