Guardians Vol. 2 – James Gunn Reveals a Place Where We Didn’t Look For Easter Eggs

James Gunn Reveals a Place For Easter Eggs:

James Gunn recently held a Quarantine watch party for Guardians Vol. 2 where he answered a bunch of fan questions and revealed intricate details & the hidden meanings of a few scenes in the film. One of the amazing revelations was Rocket saying “I can’t lose another friend today.” Most of us thought that Rocket was talking about Peter Quill here since he was left on the planet fighting his father. But Rocket was actually talking about Yondu since he knew that Yondu was going to save Quill.

Guardians Vol. 2

Yondu & Rocket became good friends on their journey to Ego. We saw a lot of character development in their scenes together. Ultimately on Ego, Rocket ended up giving Yondu an Aero-Rig and a spacesuit. Rocket knew that Yondu didn’t save Quill in the past because he was skinny. He saved Quill because he had found out about what Ego was doing to his kids. So, he knew that Yondu would save Quill once again. What followed was a touching heartfelt moment of Yondu sacrificing himself to save his son, Peter Quill. He was the real daddy of Quill, not Ego.

Talking about the children of Ego, we saw millions of skulls as Ego had killed all his children because they didn’t carry the Celestial gene. Now, James Gunn has revealed that there are a bunch of Easter Eggs in the skull cave. We only get a glimpse at a few skulls from close up. Take a look:

Looking at these skulls, it is fair to say that some of the creatures here were quite massive while some could’ve been small. Looking at the whole scene with Nebula & Gamora staring at the Skulls, we could see something like a giant eye, which could be referencing something or someone from the Marvel comics lore. It could be Shuma Gorath, who knows. There seem to be a few more human-like Skulls in the pile, so that’s a nod to the fact that the people of various planets have a similar human-like body aesthetics as we’ve seen in all of the space-related films. Some of these Skulls might be of obscure Marvel characters & alien species. Knowing Gunn’s knack for Easter Eggs & referencing other great films, some of these Skulls could be referencing other films like Alien, Predator & so on. It is really tough to find out the many, many Easter Eggs that Gunn has hidden in this pile of extinct bodies.

James Gunn Reveals a Place For Easter Eggs

Avengers: Endgame was a movie with 100s of Easter Eggs, but no other film in the MCU would probably have more Easter Eggs than the two Guardians of the Galaxy films. In fact, it has been more than 5 years since people haven’t been able to discover one major Easter Egg in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Gunn has stated that it has been partially discovered, but a part of it is still yet to be found. Perhaps it has been partially discovered because there have been only 2 Guardians of the Galaxy films out. A part of that Easter Egg could be arriving in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is the last of Gunn’s plans for the Guardians. We’ll have to wait and see about that. Till then, let’s play a scavenger hunt to spot Easter Eggs in these Skulls.

It is fascinating to know that Ego went on almost every planet in the Universe and laid with one of the people. We might actually find Skulls of so many alien people here. There could be one from Gamora’s Zehoberi planet, Nebula’s species, Korbinites, Skrulls, Kree, more humans, Eternals, Mutants, Inhumans, people from Norrin Radd’s planet Zenn-La, and so on. Marvel could set up many future stories from the Skrulls buried in this cave. We’ve already seen that Ego also mated with one of Mantis’ kind, and the rumor is that Mantis is also Ego’s daughter. So perhaps Quill & Mantis might be related. Let’s see what revelations come from this Skull Island in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
