Infinity War – Tony Strange & Iron Mage Deleted Scene:
We’ve known for a while that Tony Stark & Stephen Strange were going to switch suits in Avengers: Infinity War. What we ultimately got was Stark & Peter rescuing Strange who was getting tortured at the hands of Ebony Maw. But in an alternate sequence, Stark was supposed to send his own Nanotech suit onto Strange and the Cloak of Levitation would’ve come onto Stark. So there would’ve been a suit switch between the two Sherlocks.
We’ve seen Robert Downey Jr. on the set wearing the red cloak. But we never got to see Benedict Cumberbatch in the Iron Man suit. It did happen as Kevin Smith revealed that he had seen a photo of Benedict Cumberbatch in the Iron Man suit. Here’s what he said on an episode of the YouTube show Fatman Beyond:
“There’s footage or a photo of Robert Downey Jr wearing the cape that came out long before Infinity War came out, so we know they shot it. We know personally that they shot it because when the writers (came and spoke to us at the house before they left they were like ‘You wanna see something?’ And they pulled out the phone and literally showed us, not just a drawing cause that’s what’s going around the internet is there’s a drawing and it looks badass, but they showed us f***in Sherlock in the Iron Man f***in suit man. Like wearing the suit, with Tony standing next to him wearing the cape, and we were like ‘WHAT THE F***,’ and they were like ‘We can’t say, never talk about it.’ Then it’s out in the world and I’m like ‘We saw that photo!’ It looked badass.”

Well, today is our lucky day as the writers of Avengers: Infinity War have finally revealed the photo of Benedict Cumberbatch wearing the Iron Man armor. It came from the writers on Avengers: Infinity War’s Quarantine Watch Party. It is likely that this scene was edited out of the film quite early so the special effects on the scene aren’t complete. But one could argue that even if they aren’t, we need to see the footage of this scene because it cannot happen again in the MCU since Tony Stark won’t be returning.
Maybe at some point of time, we will see the entire scene and what really happened in it. Although, it’d be fair to assume that Marvel might have saved the “Iron Mage” sequence for some time later in the MCU. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could use the Multiverse to bring in the Iron Mage.
Doctor Strange wearing an Iron Man suit is too big of an idea not to be brought to life. Marvel probably knows this and they will make it happen in one way or the other. We could get this version in one of the upcoming What If…? episodes. If not that, then there’s always a possibility of a future Avengers Secret Wars movie happening in the future. That’s where Iron Mage could come into play. We’ll just have to wait & have faith in the Marvel system that has never really disappointed us. Marvel finds ways for things to happen even if they aren’t able to execute them initially.
There are many examples of this. Marvel didn’t nail the Mandarin on their first go, so now they are bringing in the real Mandarin in Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings. We didn’t get to see how the Hulk turned into Smart Hulk in Endgame, but it could surely happen in the upcoming She-Hulk series. The Russos didn’t get to execute their original plans for Captain America 3, but now those will be incorporated in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier. So let’s wait and see how the Iron Mage comes into play in a future MCU film.
Doctor Strange 2 arrives on March 25, 2022.
