Superman has been doing well on The CW, but it is safe to say that WB hasn’t used him to his full potential on the big screen in the recent years. In fact, they’ve actually ruined the possibility of the great future that Superman could’ve had with Henry Cavill playing the character. The world still loves him as Superman. They still want more from him. But WB seems to be looking in a different direction.
Henry Cavill’s movie career is on an all-time high. It all happened with him playing the villain in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Then, he starred as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher, which became the biggest show the streaming service has produced. And now, his name is being attached to almost every upcoming MCU character. Cavill surely has his own fan base and WB should not let him go.
In the latest with Empire (via Fandom), Amy Adams revealed that she’ll “totally be open” to return as Lois Lane in any future DC movie. But according to her, we shouldn’t hold high hopes for Superman because even she isn’t holding out hope for her return. WB is not looking for Cavill’s version of Superman to be back on the big screen as she said:
“I think [the studio is] moving in a different direction, from my understanding.”
All of this is despite us hearing rumors of Cavill returning in Shazam! 2. No one really knows whether WB will bring the Man of Steel back, but people would definitely share a similar opinion stating that WB should give Man of Steel another shot. What they did with Superman in the first Shazam! movie is proof that WB doesn’t want any more negotiations with Cavill. Furthermore, we got a report that Michael B. Jordan has already spoken to the movie studio about a Superman movie. Even Dwayne Johnson didn’t confirm anything when he was asked about Superman vs. Black Adam for the future. All he had to say for this was “maybe down the road.”
It’s sad that Superman is not getting his fair share on the big screen. First his face was ruined in Justice League. Then his head was cut off in Shazam!. And now he seems to have vanished completely from the DCEU. Warner Bros. has done this to Batman by giving him a complete reboot. Now they’re also doing the same with Superman.
The only thing that could actually change things for Superman is the Justice League Snyder Cut. If WB does allow Zack Snyder to finish his cut, then they might just bring Superman back for Man of Steel 2 as well. Henry Cavill still hopes for a return as Superman. Here’s what he said about playing Superman again:
“I’m not just going to sit quietly in the dark as all this stuff is going on. I’ve not given up the role. There’s a lot I have to give for Superman yet. A lot of storytelling to do. A lot of real, true depths to the honesty of the character I want to get into. I want to reflect the comic books. That’s important to me. There’s a lot of justice to be done for Superman. The status is: You’ll see.”
For now, things don’t look good either for the Snyder Cut or for Superman. The writing is on the wall for a new Superman because if WB wanted to bring Cavill back, then they would’ve made a move already. Since that isn’t happening, we should move on as well, no matter how hard it is. Things are not going well for the movie business anyway. All the potential blockbusters have been delayed. So, it is bad news after bad news. But let’s hope that we will get the good news about the return of Cavill as Superman sometime in the coming years.
