The First Morbius Trailer is Out & Confirms MCU Connetion

First Morbius Trailer:

WB didn’t use Jared Leto as well as they should have. He could have given us a very different Joker, but the majority of footage that was shot for the Suicide Squad was left on the editing room floor. Now, Sony is not making the same mistake as WB did. They’re making the full use of Jared Leto’s talents as Morbius the Living Vampire. Leto can get pretty intense with his acting, and that’s exactly Morbius needed. We’ve finally got the first trailer of Sony’s first Marvel movie this year, i.e. Morbius. Take a look at it:

You have to give credit to Sony & Jared Leto. Yes, the film is more than 6 months away, so there’s probably a lot of work that is left to be done in post-production. But as we’ve said in the past, this film can totally surprise us, and it has already done so. It does justice to Michael Morbius as a character with his rare disease.

What the trailer did well was tease the many things that are going to be a part of the film, but nothing major was revealed. His origin was teased. At his core, Morbius is a Vampire, and this trailer made that very certain. Unlike the first trailer of Venom, which didn’t even have any Venom, this trailer actually manages to give us the first look at the final form of Morbius. It seems to be a good blend of make-up & CGI.

The trailer also gave us a look at Tyrese Gibson’s character. Gibson is playing an FBI agent who is hunting down Morbius. We got a good look at Adria Arjona who is appearing as Martine Bancroft, the love interest of Michael Morbius. Sherlock Holmes star Jared Harris appeared as the mentor of Morbius and finally, we also got the first look at Doctor Who stars Matt Smith who is portraying the villain of the film, Loxias Crown.

Now that we’ve done all the exposition, let’s get to the cool stuff. In the back of a shot, we saw the graffiti art of Spider-Man. So, he clearly exists in this world even though this movie may not mention him a lot. But what’s interesting is that the art has murderer written all over it. Mysterio just revealed Peter Parker’s identity to the entire world and framed him for his own murder. So, it is natural that the world sees Spider-Man as a murderer and this could all be cannon to the MCU. But is it actually the same world as the MCU? The trailer gave us another major hint that it is!!

The actor who makes a surprising cameo in the trailer is none other than Michael Keaton. It isn’t clear whether he is playing Adrian Toomes from MCU’s Spider-Man: Homecoming or is he some other character. He doesn’t particularly say anything weird as we just hear him addressing Morbius as he says, “Michael Morbius. Got tired doing the whole good guy thing huh? What’s up Doc?” this could very well be anyone else, but we just can’t get past the fact that it has to be none other than Adrian Tooms. Even JK Simmons is said to appear as J. Jonah Jameson, so all of this could be stating a connection to the MCU somehow.

Spider-Man's Morbius Cameo Leaks

It’d be interesting to see if any other MCU actors will show up. A Venom cameo would make sense as it’d establish this film to be a part of Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters. But if Adrian Toomes is a part of the film. If someone who recruited him at the very end of Spider-Man: Homecoming has put him up to recruit Morbius for the Sinister Six, then things could really become interesting for the MCU. Let’s see what will happen in the next 3 Sony films – Morbius, Venom 2 & Spider-Man 3. These films are supposed to make Sony & Disney’s Spider-Man deal much clearer.

Directed Daniel Espinosa from a script written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Morbius stars Jared Leto, Tyrese Gibson, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris and Matt Smith. It comes out on July 31, 2020.
