New Set Photos of The Suicide Squad Show the Ridiculous DC Villains in Costume

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is gonna be nuts! He is going all out bringing in DC villains that many of us have never even heard of. He has scraped the depths of DC’s barrel and picked up whatever unfamiliar name he could get his hands on. And that’s what’s going to make this movie so damn awesome! James Gunn picked up a band of outcasts and misfits and turned them into such lovable characters with Guardians of the Galaxy. Now, he is going a step ahead to probably make something even better than that with The Suicide Squad.

A while back, James Gunn tweeted the names of everyone that was joining his new iteration of The Suicide Squad which is a sequel to the first Suicide Squad movie that was directed by David Ayer. Upon his tweet, he also wrote “don’t get too attached.” That really meant that a lot of the new upcoming characters are going to die in the movie. And now, we’ve got these new Set photos from Justjared.com which reveal the ridiculous new characters that James Gunn is bringing at us.

New Set Photos of The Suicide Squad

Last week, we got to know the various characters that these new actors are going to play in the film. And now we’ve got photos for many of them. Jai Courtney is back as Captain Boomerang, and his new suit looks more toned down, and similar to the one we saw in his previous film. Then there’s the character of Nathan Fillion who people have been pretty excited about. He is playing a Booster Gold villain called Blackguard.

It is kind of a joke that James Gunn has cast Nathan as Blackguard because for the longest of times, people have been asking him whether he is playing Booster Gold or not. Blackguard doesn’t have any superpowers of his own. He is from the future and his suit is what gives him his powers. Then the other actors & their characters in the set photos are Pete Davidson playing Savant, Mailing Ng playing Mongal, Flula Borg playing Javelin and Sean Gunn playing a CGI character called Weasel.

DC Villains in Costume

Mongal is the daughter of Superman villain Mongul and is a villain in the comics. Javelin doesn’t have any powers of his own as he is just a master hand to hand combatant who throws his javelin at his opponents. Sean Gunn does the Motion capture for Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy, and he will be doing one for Weasel in The Suicide Squad. Pete Davidson’s character is called Savant. He started off helping people, but kept failing at it so he became a villain. He is great at hand to hand combat, and has got a genius level intellect.

The rest of the article could contain potential SPOILERS for The Suicide Squad, so you’ve been warned.

Now the reason why James Gunn has got this insane set of characters is because there are probably going to be 2 teams of The Suicide Squad in the film. Amanda Waller will probably dis at the team of the original film, so she’d bring in this new one containing Mongal, Captain Boomerang, Weasel, Blackguard, Savant & Javelin. There could be more characters in this first team but let’s just assume that this is the first bunch. These characters will be sent on a mission and all of them could actually die right in the first act of the film.

The whole idea of the Suicide Squad is that the government makes these criminals do certain missions that no one else would do. All of these criminals are expendable and that’s what this first team would show. All of these characters mentioned above could die, leading Amanda Waller to go to her last resort, i.e. assembling a new team, or rather mix of the new and the original members of The Suicide Squad.

That’s where Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flagg & Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn would come in along with the new members like Idris Elba’s Vigilante, Steve Agee’s King Shark, David Dastmalchian’s Polkadot Man, John Cena’s Peacemaker & Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher. Taika Waititi is probably also playing a CGI character that we don’t know of. Michael Rooker’s character could also be a part of this final Suicide Squad team.

Disney Trying to Figure Out What to do With Deadpool

Just remember what happened in Deadpool 2. The entire marketing campaign of the movie sold us the idea of the X Force with certain characters and then to subvert our expectations, they killed them off in no time. Something similar seems to be happening with The Suicide Squad as well. Rumors suggest that the film is going to be R-Rated, so we could expect a very gory death for the first team, and then followed by that would probably be more hardcore action carried by the likes of Vigilante, Peacemaker and others.

The timeline of the film would logically be set after Suicide Squad, Justice League and Birds of Prey as Harley Quinn could end up in jail by the end of her upcoming movie. So, we could imagine that this sequel would happen 4-5 years after the first film, just like the release date of the movie. Will Smith’s Deadshot could be written out as being busy on some other mission so he could return in a sequel. The Suicide Squad won’t be James Gunn’s final DC movie as he could return for more Suicide Squad sequels after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Let’s see how things turn out for DC’s future. It sure looks to be quite exciting as after the success of Joker, we’ve got Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, The Batman, The Suicide Squad & Aquaman 2 with confirmed release dates.
