The future of the DCEU is almost over as all the upcoming movies will be individual and independent, not connecting with other films. Aquaman 2 won’t have anything to do with Wonder Woman 1984 or Shazam!, and that’s how it will be with other films. Moreover, they are beginning an entirely new franchise set in a different continuity with Robert Pattinson’s Batman. So, you’d think that they would want to do the same with Superman as well.
We recently talked about how the upcoming rumored Supergirl movie could be set in the same Universe as Matt Reeves’ The Batman. We Got This Covered previously reported that WB is trying to kick start a different continuity with The Batman, and even though it will be an independent trilogy, Supergirl will exist in the same Universe. Now they’ve come up with another report saying that Warner Bros want to make a move with Superman as well.
Considering the fact that they took no time to cast Robert Pattinson as Batman, they could do the same with Superman as well. Henry Cavill is going to be busy with The Witcher for the next 2-3 years as the show will surely have multiple seasons, so it is obvious that he isn’t coming back. We didn’t see him in Shazam! as he denied a cameo. For that reason, what we saw was a headless Superman.
Now, that WB are giving themselves another chance with The Batman, they could do that with Sups was well. They could perhaps launch a new Superman movie set in the same universe as The Batman, and then bring in Supergirl by the next film. Or what they can do is take the CW series approach. They could give us a Supergirl origin in a world where Superman and Battinson already exist. That is where Sups could play a supporting role, guiding and assisting Supergirl. From there on, he could move onto star in his own Solo film.
Doing this will prevent WB from doing another boring origin of Superman, and could straight away put him into action. “Who is going to be the next Batman?” is what people keep on asking. Well, the next question is going to be “Who will be the next Superman?” WB could take the liberty of casting a Superman of color, but it shouldn’t really happen in our opinion. If they do want to tell a great tale of Superman then it has to be with a white Clark Kent. Just give us Sups vs. Braniac on the big screen. We don’t care about anything else.
Once you’ve established these characters with Trilogies, bring them together for the real Justice League! The brand may have been tainted for now and a sequel would surely not be happening, but it has to happen 10 years down the line. An older Battinson could be taking the charge along with a new Superman and a Supergirl. By the time we reach The Batman 3, Wonder Woman, Shazam! and Aquaman will have all finished their trilogies. So, we could expect them to be recast and brought into the shared Universe of Batman, Superman and Supergirl. With what WB seems to be doing right now, it does appear that this will be the only way we could get a Justice League in the future. The old DCEU is long gone and we shouldn’t expect it to continue any more.
The upcoming slate of DC movies looks like this – Joker (October 4), Birds of Prey And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (February 13, 2020), Wonder Woman 1984 (June 5, 2020), The Batman (June 25, 2021), The Suicide Squad (August 6, 2021) and Aquaman 2 (December 16, 2022). Black Adam, The Flash, Shazam! 2, Martian Manhunter & Green Lantern Corps are the films that could follow.
It’s sad that we won’t get a good Justice League movie with the cast that Snyder brought together. But it’s time to move on.
