The Little Change Made to Korg That No One Noticed in Avengers: Endgame
Avengers: Endgame fulfilled all of our fantasies by bringing all the MCU characters we have grown to love together. The funny thing about the MCU is that there’s no character that anyone actually hates. All the heroes are likable, that’s why all of them being together was a great sight to watch. But what’s lovely is that Marvel did not leave out the little characters. Even the likes of Korg, Miek and Howard the Duck made appearances in the film.
Back in 2018 after we saw Infinity War, we were told that Valkyrie did survive Thanos’ attack on Thor’s ship. She escaped along with Korg Miek and many Asgardian people. The writers told us that Valkyrie even survived the snap as she is in Avengers: Endgame. But what’s interesting is that they asked us to pray for Korg and Miek. That was an indication of Korg and Miek not surviving the snap. But to the surprise of everyone, they had the best bit to do in what little time they got in Endgame.
Korg is a very special character brought in by Taika Waititi. He was a show stealer in Thor: Ragnarok in every scene that he got, and the same goes for Avengers: Endgame. We see the pile of Rocks crashing with Miek and the fat God of Thunder in New Asgard playing Fortnite. He then shows up during the final battle along with Valkyrie and the Asgardian soldiers.
It had been 5 years since Korg escaped Thanos and we’ve been led to believe that he was with Thor for the better part of those years. So, he has been living with Thor for all this time and he has witnessed his downfall first hand. Thor’s failures struck him hard and we all saw the consequences of that. Thor, Korg and Miek may have been happy on the outside, but they weren’t happy on the inside. Apparently, they had been living a life of losers. But what we didn’t notice was how gross their lifestyle became.
This is the first time that people noticed Korg having only 4 fingers on each hand. Well, that isn’t a problem as Fortnite only requires two thumbs and two forefingers. But Reddit user AmazingSpdrMan1 pointed out that “In Endgame, you can see Korg has moss forming on his rocks that was not there in Ragnorok.” The snap really took a lot away from the entire Universe.
Spotting this little detail is actually pretty cool on the part of the redditor. But what’s interesting is that a great deal of thought went into bringing this scene together. Avengers: Endgame’s VFX supervisor Russell Earl told ComicBook.com:
“Like one of the ideas that made it in there was when [Meik] ends up throwing a piece of pizza at the TV, that was something that the animation team came up with. And you know, those guys are such great characters. It was their moment to shine too, Miek in particular but Korg as well. When I asked them about the decision to give Miek a piece of pizza in each claw while another was already in his mouth, Earl admits that it’s something the animation team at ILM came up with as an attempt at character development in the smallest timeframe possible.
The Russos are all about storytelling, so it’s not just doing shots per se, we’re always thinking about, ‘Okay, so what is the story here? What’s going on? What are they doing?’ And just trying to imbibe as much character as we can into them. Even though they’re on screen for the brief moments, it’s trying to give them a story and give them character and life.”
Well, it was good to see Korg not get dusted. Now we can hope for him to return in a future MCU movie that brings Valkyrie into the picture. That would certainly happen in Thor 4, but it could also happen sometime before that. Taika Waititi is rumored to return for another directorial job. Let’s hope that it happens soon enough.
