Matt Reeves’ The Batman is finally moving forward quite nicely now as the script has finally been solidified by the director. We now have the new face that will carry the torch forward for the next few years as Reeves is building his own Bat-Universe. This film is said to be set in the early days of Bruce Wayne’s crime-fighting life, although Matt Reeves has denied any inspiration from the Year One storyline. We could still see elements of Batman’s origins, but this will certainly not be an origin story.
As revealed by Matt Reeves, this film will have a certified Rogues Gallery on display, so that obviously means that Batman and his villains already exist in the Universe that is being brought forward. Here’s what Reeves had to say about the villains of the film:
“We’re thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer. Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story. There will be a Rogues Gallery. The casting process will begin shortly. We’re starting to put together our battle plan. I’m doing another pass on the script and we’ll begin some long-lead stuff to start developing conceptual things.”
A report from The Hollywood Reporter recently stated that the film is supposed to feature 6 villains and we will have Penguin & Catwoman as the main Antagonists. Considering the fact that there are multiple villains, we can assume that there are surely going to be some bad-ass fight sequences in the movie. Just imagine an Arkham game come to life. The Penguin is said to be the big bad, so it is entirely possible that he would hire the rest of the Rogues to take down the Dark Knight.
But at the same time, Reeves is building a Noir-themed aesthetic for the story which will take a more grounded approach, exploring the Detective skills of the Caped Crusader. No film has particularly delved into Batman being the World’s Number 1 detective, and this one will do exactly that. Here’s what Reeves had to say about his Noir-Batman themed story:
“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”
Now considering the fact that this movie is going to involve a lot of Mystery solving, who’s better than the Riddler to set up those mysteries? Those who have played Arkham Knight would have assumed that in a story like this, the Riddler’s involvement is a must. Now, coming from WeGotThisCovered, we’ve got a confirmation that The Riddler will indeed be the third main villain in the movie.
As far as the other 3 are concerned, we can assume one to surely be Two Face, and since the females are less, we could have Poison Ivy. And to make things different by giving us a new face and add a bit of a muscle into the Rogues, we may just get to see Clayface! Or to bring in in all the 90s Batman movie villains except the Joker, Matt Reeves could, in fact, add Bane. But let’s see what happens.
The Batman will star Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne and it’ll hit the theatres on June 25, 2021.
