Marvel’s Phase 4 will probably be full of sequels as we’ve got the likes of Black Panther 2, Doctor Strange 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Ant-Man and the Wasp 3 & Captain Marvel 2 headed our way. But along with that, we’ve got some new heroes & projects coming in as well. The Eternals & Shang Chi are probably the confirmed ones while there have been major hints for Namor, Ms. Marvel, Black Knight, and Captain Britain to come in as well.
Kevin Feige has talked about the upcoming slate for the next 5 years, and he has mentioned the fact that there are going to be some new faces coming in, along with the ones we are familiar with. He said:
“The slate that we’re building over the next five years [is] not apples to apples. It is two very distinct things and I hope they’ll feel very distinct. But there is a similar mentality going into it, which is ‘How can we continue to tell stories with some of the characters that audiences already know and love in a unique way, in a different way, in surprising way, of which we have a lot of plans and ideas and work already going into it?’ [Then] ‘How can we introduce new characters that even hardcore fans, comic fans, have barely known or barely heard of.’ That’s really exciting too.
Some of these films will feature characters that you already know. Some supporting characters will assume leading roles, while some new characters will be introduced. The reward for all of these films working is that we get to try to do it again and do it differently and learn from our mistakes and try something we haven’t tried before.”
That being said, let’s talk about the hints that we’ve got for these incoming Superheroes. While the films haven’t mentioned Black Knight anywhere, we’ve certainly seen references for Namor and Black Knight in Avengers: Endgame. Namor came in when Okoyo told Natasha about the Earthquake underwater, but there has been an Easter Egg related to him back in Iron Man 2 as well so he isn’t as new. What’s interesting is the tease for Captain Britain.
It happened during the 1970s segment when Cap saw Peggy. In this scene, we hear, or rather read the subtitles where Peggy says “Braddock hasn’t checked in. I’m not a meteorologist and it’s not lightning.” Braddock here refers to Brian Braddock who goes on to become Captain Britain. Even the directors have more or less confirmed it by playing coy when asked about it. Here’s what Joe Russ said:
“I think we uh, maybe… or maybe it’s just a guy named Braddock [laughs].”
So perhaps there is some truth to the fact that Captain Britain is headed our way sooner rather than later. We Got This Covered has a close source which says the same thing. So it’d be interesting to see how exactly Captain Britain makes his MCU debut. A Twitter account that goes by Roger Wardell has claimed that Marvel is planning a Black Knight Trilogy, and there was a report last year which suggested that Guy Ritchie could be taking on a Captain Britain and Black Knight movie for Marvel. So, does Captain Britain make his entry there?
There are even rumors which suggest that Henry Cavill could be taking on the role of Captain Britain. Well, it may not be so bad to see him don the role since we probably won’t get to see him return as Superman anyway. But let’s not get too excited. Anything could happen. Let’s just hope that it happens soon enough. 2023 or 2024 could be the years when Captain Britain makes his MCU debut. It would be interesting to see him become a part of the Avengers as then there would be 3 Captains and the pack will become so much more interesting!
