There are some things that people just can’t let go. 2018 has been a year of that sorts as right from the start, people have been yammering about the Snyder Cut of Justice League which was never even completed. As the year came to an end, we came across James Gunn getting fired by Disney from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to the controversial tweets that the director wrote 9 years ago.
To this date, we are still talking about Gunn’s departure. 2 other departures that have clearly hurt the sentiments of the people are of Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill from the roles of Batman and Superman.
Out of all these, none of the things that the fans want are really going to happen. The world has been pleading Disney to rehire James Gunn. There have been billboards, petitions and what not, but Disney is still adamant upon their decision. The cast members of Guardians of the Galaxy issued a statement, pleading Disney to rehire James Gunn, but even that wasn’t enough. Here’s what they wrote collectively:
“We fully support James Gunn. We were all shocked by his abrupt firing last week and have intentionally waited these ten days to respond in order to think, pray, listen, and discuss. In that time, we’ve been encouraged by the outpouring of support from fans and members of the media who wish to see James reinstated as director of Volume 3 as well as discouraged by those so easily duped into believing the many outlandish conspiracy theories surrounding him.”
A lot of time has passed, Gunn has even changed teams now as he has been confirmed to be writing the next chapter of The Suicide Squad, but people still want to see him return. The good thing is that his story will still be used for the film. Chris Pratt recently told MTV News that he has seen the script of Guardians Vol. 3 written by James Gunn. Here’s what he said for it:
“Yeah. Yeah I have. It’s off the chain. It’s so good. It’s so good. I love James [Gunn]. I’m loyal to James and I love him so much. And we’re gonna deliver the movie, we’re gonna give the fans what they deserve. I think it’s in the nature of the Guardians of the Galaxy to come together and get the job done and that’s what we’ll do.”
James Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn, who did the motion capture for Rocket Raccoon confirmed last year that Disney intends to use his brother’s script for the third movie, even though it is on an indefinite hold:
“I don’t really know yet what’s going on with Guardians 3. I know that Disney still wants to make the movie. I know that they have every intention of using the script that my brother wrote. Obviously, that was a very unfortunate situation for everybody, most of all him, but I am also somebody who had been preparing to spend half a year making that movie and now that’s up in the air.
Obviously, I think it’s a tricky proposition for them to find another director to step in — and also the scheduling of a lot of other actors who are incredibly busy can’t be easy. But I know that they plan on making the movie. I had not been contacted at all for a while, but I was recently contacted by Marvel saying, ‘Yeah, we do plan to make this movie. We’re just not sure when yet.'”
Hopefully, Disney will sort things out as early as possible. The last reported production year for Vol. 3 was stated to be 2021, so we may get to see the third chapter in 2022. Hopefully, a great director will be brought into the picture, and Disney will still be able to deliver the final Guardians of the Galaxy movie. A lot will depend upon how Avengers: Endgame ends as that will lead the Guardians into Vol. 3. So, let’s keep our fingers crossed.
